Green lines on boot, new build

another vote for the GPU, i think that's the likeliest culprit then :) I did try chkdsk, i came back clean. i fell asleep before running sfc I'll try that today when i get home, altho based on feedback here i'm going to concentrate on the GPU. I'll try a combination of denis & ketchup's...

Green lines on boot, new build

I did a quick search on nvidia's site. The march driver is version 314, i did try the one that came with the card which was 306 (October) and it did the same thing. Do you think the March v314 driver will still help? So far that's two votes for the GPU... does a chkdsk still have relelvance...

Green lines on boot, new build

I don't think it's overheated since it happens on cold boot and once the computer warms up it is less likely to do it. I suppose it could be possible that the VRAM is bad though... do you know of any way I can test that? Is there a prime95 equivalent for GPUs? I have other video cards i can pull...

Green lines on boot, new build

Hey folks, I'm hoping somebody can help me troubleshoot this or perhaps has seen it before. There are a bunch of horizontal green lines that show when the "Windows Starting" screen comes up (see image below). On cold boot there is about 75% chance of getting it. On a warm boot (ie restart) it...

    Putting together business/developer rig

Maybe a little more info on what it is your doing? Photoshop can vary greatly from doing small web graphics to a hundred layer poster size PSD. If you're pretty much opening one large file and working on it for a long time, invest in RAM and CPU. If you are running batches of actions across...

Please help me select lowest idle power Mobo + CPU for HTPC and file server

Slight update. Kill a watt says the box is using about 34w at idle. Max of 55w during boot. This is with no optical drive, just a WD 640gb drive and no attempt at undervolting other than stock power savings (eist, etc). I suspect the built in PSU is not very efficient.

OC and questions with new 2600K and ASRock Z68 PROFESSIONAL GEN3

Can't help on the OC, but for XP are your running your drives in AHCI? If so, when you installed XP did you use the "press F6 to load raid drivers" (or sounds like that) function? If that ain't it then I suspect you've got some bit of hardware (maybe NB or something mobo based you can't unplug)...

Please help me select lowest idle power Mobo + CPU for HTPC and file server

Hi velis thanks for the info on the different model#s. I looked around a lot and didn't see what was the difference other than power consumption and clock speed. I assumed the 2100 & 2100T used the same GPU *facepalm*. Oh well :) I set up the box just last night. I'm using CoreAVC as a decoder...

Please help me select lowest idle power Mobo + CPU for HTPC and file server

Vellis thanks for updating this thread. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a miniITX setup for the 2nd client. I had already ordered by the time your review came up, but you made me feel a lot better about it :) . I ended up getting an ASUS P8H61 mini-ITX mobo, Core i3 2100T, and a...

Please help me select lowest idle power Mobo + CPU for HTPC and file server

@Velis I couldn't help notice your using MediaPortal. I currently am using one box as server/client (as it appears your doing) specs in my sig. I need a second client for the another TV for sure, and I am considering putting the TV Server and all of it's associated cable boxes, cables, mess, etc...

    Electric Bill

I am/was in a similar boat (I think you commented on my thread actually). I had a Q9650 @4Ghz with a bunch of HDDs pulling 150w+ at idle that I just took apart. I'm in the process of putting together the new version with a 2600k and yanking out some RAID0's and replacing with SSDs, and...

spare PC, want built a server with, need help

I don't recall that board specifically, but make sure that all 6 ports are from the same chipset. *some* boards have an additional controller to add extra ports and you cannot RAID across chipsets (as far as I know). Yes it will rebuild if something happens. It is slow however. Which RAID type...

spare PC, want built a server with, need help

I'm running RAID5 on one of my computers with Windows 7 Home Premium (I think its home premium...). And I was running RAID10 (0+1?) on my main desktop (definitely Win7 Home Premium), but that pretty well sucked so I dropped to RAID0 and made sure my backups were up to date....

spare PC, want built a server with, need help

Your best, cheapest bet is probably FreeNAS (I've never used OpenFiler). It's actually not hard to setup and run - you don't need to use the command line unless you want to. It's been a while since I used it, but there was even a web interface for it. If you want to use Windows only, Windows...

need advice for a mid-high range build

Thanks for the tip on the Intel 510. I'll see if I can dig up some reviews for it (unless somebody has it handy), I wouldn't mind an approx $50 premium if the performance is worth it. The Z68 boards seem to all have SATA 6Gbps connections so I should be able to take advantage of it.

That's a really nice price. I've had good luck with Gigabyte on S775. Most of the what I've been reading for S1155 has been around ASRock and Asus. I assume these are all good choices? When I'm ready to buy I'll definitley keep an eye out for the combo deals. I'm disappointed in my potential...

need advice for a mid-high range build

If I recall right, it was pulling just under 200w at idle measured by a Kill-A-Watt. At load I think it was around 300w. At one point I had it down around 150w at idle, but then I added a bunch of drives and swapped video cards... My goal isn't just lower power consumption though, I also want...

HTPC/server/transcoding and the role of the cpu?

I don't have any input on the newer CPUs, unfortunately, but I figure I'd chime in on my setup. silent daw build - seeking critiques from the geeks

+1 on the forums at silentpcreview in regards to keeping this rig quiet. They'll have really good advice on the fans and case. +1 on NOOOOOO to the 5970. Way overkill. Server Drive - Green, Blue, or Black?

I use several of the green drives in my HTPC. I use 3 1TB EADS in RAID5 for long term storage of videos, music, etc and I have one 500GB AACS as the recording drive (which was a 1TB EADS, and will be again very soon). I've also had them in my desktop as storage as well. the 1TB EADS are...

Just adding a little bit to this really good post.... The "gotcha" with Carbonite is it will only backup local drives, not networked or external drives. Otherwise, for the price it is really a good solution, easy to use, automatic, and overall a very nice service. Mozy, and JungleDisk (which...

I have to ask, if you're only there for 5 days why not just process the photos when you get back? Then you only have to worry about the camera. Wordpress database performance

by "heavily customized Wordpress" do you mean the theme/layout? or you've acutally customized Wordpress itself? I don't think Wordpress is what you would want to use for that. Sync laptops and Desktop, what to use?

For strictly local stuff, I use either robocopy (similar to the batch script above) or synctoy. I use them manually. For automated sync among various computers, I use Dropbox. That's limited at 2GB (free) so it may not work depending on what you want to sync. MS's new version of Live Mesh...

Good CPU for ripping BluRay to an HTPC?

OK, with the CPU in my sig (q9650 @4.1Ghz) I compressed Terminator Salvation (about a 2hr movie) using "normal" profile with Chapters unchecked. Took 19mins to encode. Quality is great. If you run the same settings on an approximately 2hr movie that should give you a ballpark. An i7 860 or 930...

Good CPU for ripping BluRay to an HTPC?

I can't give you a really exact answer for #1... but I did a test ages ago using Xvid to see how much improvement I got from multiple setups. So don't take these numbers as real in any way shape or form, just representative. e6300 (stock 1.8Ghz) = 2.5hrs q6600 (stock 2.6?) = 1.5hrs q6600 (OC...

    ***Official*** HTC EVO 4G thread

I've had this phone since Friday and LOVE IT. Blazing fast. Easily as quick or quicker than my co-workers iPhone 3GS at flipping screens, launching apps, etc. Blows it away in download speeds and rendering webpages. Makes my old Blackberry Curve2 look like a turtle. And even though it isn't...

    New build for gaming/DVR/dev/misc stuff

another vote for the corsair 400cx. Really solid power supply. And that system, if you aren't overclocking it, and you aren't putting some massive energysucking GPU in it will probably consume about 100-200w during normal use (including gaming. If you want to go Nvidia, definitely look at the...

What's more beneficial for mother in law system? More ram or faster ram?

    Minimum acceptable desktop PC

minimum dual-core, whether amd, intel, or (intel) atom. I tend to think for the most part RAM is more important. Do I need a new video encoding program or a new CPU?

+1 on a switch to h.264 If you want to continue using AutoGK (it really is SUPER easy), there is an xvid codec that is multi-threaded. You have to dig around for it as it's not shipped with AutoGK, I think because it caused some glitches under certain circumstances. I saw increased performance...

What are you using to send from your phone? Then that same website lets you browse. Or depending on...

Question: reason for building a custom desktop?

Echoing what some others have said... You can't compete with pre-built for general-use (read, cheap) computers. I can't come anywhere near a $399 Dell or HP computer. You're right the cost of the OS alone kills the price (unless it's a rebuild and use the previous license or go linux...). And in...
