AMD's Phil Rogers jumps ship to Nvidia

"corporate fellow from AMD" FYI usually means he helped out but wasn't in charge of much besides special projects. Most 'fellow' positions are place holders until they find an opening or often just a way for high level players to get paid while waiting to figure out what they want to do next...

Have you sped up your upgrade cycle, slowed it down, or neither?

Slowed way down... still I'm on an old overclocked 8150... going into what year 4 or 5...? Will probably grab an 8320 or 8370 this year just to have the last available and most efficient AM3+ CPU for when it becomes the Linux Workstation replacement.

Only failure to OC i can think of: KIII 350 @ 500 - eventually wouldn't even run at 350 anymore.. my two biggest O'C'.s % wise just became obsolete tech... Cel 333 @ 500 - in a box somewhere Duron 650 @ 1000mhz - in a box somewhere Lost a few cheap PSU's along the way, but no boards, and...

You should be able to find one for $100-150, I think the wild card certs at alphaSSL (partner with dynadot) is $149.

12 year old son wants to learn programming

Depends on what he (thinks he) wants to do. I was about 11 when i first learned BASIC, learned PASCAL, C and C++ in school. I went the Unix Admin -> Security Engineer route so I have less need for the low level languages, and a high need for the DRY languages like Python. For me Python...

Update: New 25 GPU Monster Devours Passwords In Seconds

When I was a senior info sec officer at a bank, we required all passwords to be changed every 28 days with an 8+ password history. Poor password choices and quickly shrinking password crack times were the biggest reasons... That was 9 years ago.

One Each - Best Programming and Scripting Language

Python for scripting all day It replaced Perl for me, and is becoming the default scripting/admin language for most modern Linux distros post Perl. Many of the system admin tools have been written in python, and its usually installed by default.

Can my company see my gmail?

IMHO.. Any company that allows ssh out of its network from the corporate desktop should have their security team replaced. I check my personal email on my asus epad(cell hotspot) or my rezound directly. I very seldom check anything personal from my corporate network.

Can my company see my gmail?

Done every day at the gateway, no warning is generated. Websense is just one vendor that offers HTTPS blind proxy without the end user even knowing it. Most software filters out personal websites like medical and banks, but gmail and things like that are being parsed. It can break applications...

Can my company see my gmail?

In agreement with Luden here. As Security professional we have no choice but to monitor everything I possibly can on the network and end point. They easiest way into a corporate network these days is through the desktop. But rest assured I have no urge, nor the time to look at what you send...

My 8150 Bulldozer experience - so far!

Looking forward to your impressions, I'm probably going to wait for the last am3+ chip as the final upgrade to this rig before it goes into workstation duty. I'm not really running into anything the 8150 cant do for my needs, but the upgrade itch may get me in early/mid 2013. For that matter...

OC will shorten the hardware life span?

also why i don't use consumer raid cards and OC.. nothing sucked more then turning on the PC and seeing a broken raid (3 times).. probably much better since the old highpoint days. but I'm still gun shy with consumer level raid.

    What security appliance for home?

Depends on how handy you are. You just have to make sure you using gigabit at your network edge now. I use old PC's for my firewalls built off of smoothwall (snort, clam AV, qos, ntp, dhcp, [multi IPs with Homebrew full firewall control mod]...etc) . really low specs needed... I had to grab...

Do you compile/simulate with an overclocked CPU?

I do similar. I find the max bootable OC, back down to stable (tested), then back down another 5-10%. I would run scripts and some programs on an overclocked PC, but nothing where I relied on the computational data results.

My 8150 Bulldozer experience - so far!

One of the reasons I bought mine. All the PCs is my stable (gamer, linux workstation, office pc, kids pc) get upgraded from the "gamer" left overs. This will be a 16 gig 8 core vm linux workstation in a year or two for my security and development work. The only games I even have installed...

    Bulldozer Overclocking Questions

you should be able to get to 4.5-4.6 ghz easily, every 100mhz after that is pretty tough for all air and self contained water coolers coolers. It just starts putting out a LOT of heat with every little voltage increase.

So as a n00b to PC gaming, can someone explain how the transition to DX12 may work?

They both used slightly scaled down versions of PC hardware. It has become too expensive to R&D your own custom graphics sub systems like they used to do. Sony tried with the PS3 with the cells, but that failed terribly from a cost point of view. They ended up having to bolt on a GPU to do the...

Proving I can learn Java, C#, or any language for that matter.

syntax's come and go, only the logic remains or is improved(OO). pick a personal project you actually need/want to complete and write it the new language. I started with BASIC on my own at 11 pascal was used in college as a learning language (also learned lisp, and C) UNIX admin work gave me...

Could US cyberspies have moles inside Microsoft?

As a security person I'll say this.. While more attacks may come from the outside. the smaller number of internal attacks are more expensive per incident because people on the inside know where to look. Internal moles may not be expected, but should be planned for. Especially in a bad...

Trying to get 4.8 on a FX-8120. Bios shots inside.

The h80 isn't sufficient enough to cool the 8120 or 8150 at 4.7+, the extra voltage needed to push it that high just causes massive amounts of heat that not even my H100 can pull away fast enough. With the H100 I don't break 50c at 4.5ghz @ 1.38v, but couldn't keep core temps below ~65c at...

great deal if these are at least as good as the 200mbps last gen. I was able to get all of my FIOS speeds (25/25 at the time) in my office with these. I also used MOCA bridges in the basement to deliver networking to the Home entertainment center over the RG6 cable.. Worked pretty good with...

Discovery of Cyber Weapon by Kaspersky Labs

It's not new news, as it appears to be a variant that's been around for a couple years and has just been morphed again to avoid detection. But to call it FUD does it a dis-service. I would look up what FUD means. Its real and stealing real data. It's verified Malware causing an issue, and the...

How long can intel maintain such a large process lead over rivals?

Whats the other option, keep fighting the guy with the best fabs and most money in competition that requires the best fabs and most money? They didn't really have a choice but to leverage additional fab resources and go after places you can better compete (Llano/Trinity). Even that will only...

    CPU for a medium server?

if virtualization is important you'll get better hardware support with AMD in the mid to low end. Intel doesnt support vt-d in all its processors. if its single threaded performance means more, Intel is superior.

Does OC make me lose the warranty?

It was much easier to kill a chip years ago by overclocking because they didn't have thermal throttling built in. All modern CPU's will throttle or shutdown at extreme temps saving the chip. Even then I've never fried a chip and I've never had a non overclocked main rig. I've had flaky mobos...

    It's 2012, why the f is "Security Shield" still a valid trojan/virus?

Avast (or anything with on access scanning) noscript is your friend. use it, teach them how to surf with it. Is Port Forwarding risky?

If your not sharing/seeding anything maybe, but utorrent and the rest also uses upnp which is a service on your firewall that will auto configure port forwarding for an application that needs it. One of the worst inventions security wise ever. They only way to not open a port would be for...

    Is Port Forwarding risky?

Not entirely accurate. The software off and the port open is more secure as there is nothing to exploit. With the software off you would receive a connection refused message because the host is there but not accepting connections on that port. "Walking" a firewall will tell me which ports are...

    Securing Win2008 Server

While the windows firewall was mediocre (from a configuration standpoint) early on, the firewall in win 2008 is very good and should handle all your needs. First.. Do you have backups of the website data? Post hack is tough. At this point trust NOTHING. Unless you do FIM (File integrity monitoring), there is no way to find out for sure what was changed. There could be a backdoor, rootkit, etc. Was it a chrooted environment so the hacker...

Well I got my 8120 2 days ago and have overclocked the piss out of it :)

loaded, i couldn't keep it under 61-62c under full load stability testing. That was at 1.47 (1.45 actual under load). This thing has to become my Linux workstation in a few years, most of it's life will be as a VM workstation long after its gaming heyday so I'm trying to keep heat and...

Well I got my 8120 2 days ago and have overclocked the piss out of it :)

i was up @ 4.7 - 4.8ghz but the voltage increase needed and heat at those speeds were too much for the H100, couldn't keep it below 61c. So i backed it down to 4.5 and that is stable at 1.38v (1.35 under load with this board). The heat for that extra 200-300mhz that requires ~.1 more volts...
