    Assassin's Hardware Guide

smitbret, You are correct. It has lost a lot of viability. So much that it is in fact "almost" not really contributing much to security, or your protection. However with that said, its small, pretty harmless, and even if its 1% effective (which is a pretty true statement now), its better...

Assassin HTPC and Server Guides - Now Free

Thanks to everyone that supported me I am now able to make the guides free to everyone. I am hopeful that the ads on the site will allow it to stay that way for the foreseeable future. Thanks again to those that supported the guides. Enjoy. -Assassin www.assassinhtpcblog.com

    HD7480D APU vs 4000 IGP

Your experience is the different than mine, Nevecarial (LAV), Shark007, Renethx, and many others have reported when dealing with 1080p. The picture quality is identical when all settings are roughly equal. Its all subjective though so I respect your opinion.

    HD7480D APU vs 4000 IGP

What settings do you have turned on with each? AMD by default has most of the "torch mode" settings set to on which many videophiles cannot stand and immediately turn them off. This produces an oversaturated and high contrast "Best Buy Showroom" like picture that some people (not videophiles)...

Which HDD brands are good for bucks????

Good post. I actually prefer 5400RPM most of the time for storage (depending on the cost per GB). Its plenty fast unless you are really needing the extra RPM. All brands use many of the same internal parts. That's why the Thailand floods were so bad for the hard drive industry.

    Do I dare? (Vertex 2)

The same reason you hate WD Green hard drives. Because you had a few fail (while others have not). No different here with other peoples' experiences with OCZ.

Western Digital Green - life expectancy?

Yes, I am fully aware of the marketing claims and *theory* as to why it may be a better drive. Is there actually any data? What about for the average user who is using it for mainly storage as you say? What typical home PC user outside of a business is really using these 24/7? As I said I think...

Western Digital Green - life expectancy?

There is an awful lot of marketing behind the Red drive. Haven't seen any actual data that supports any of it.

Western Digital Green - life expectancy?

Great post. I like the 5400RPM drives for storage and playback of media personally. Red if it is $10 more for the warranty alone. Otherwise I get whatever is the best bang for $:TB. I have multiple Green/5400 RPM from Samsung and WD that are all well over 2 years old. Most of them are in...

    Yet Another Media Server Build

Not sure you need the i3-3225 as you don't need the HD4000 graphics. You could shave a few dollars by going with a i3-3220. For the PSU I would look for something quality (take a look at my PSU recs. I like Seasonic). I agree with the 400-600w range. A slightly larger PSU is nice if you ever...

Please set the record straight. Does WD green drives have head parking ?

Yes, I have read that most drives have head parking. Which is interesting because when people want to say something bad about the green or 5400RPM drives they usually rail on head parking. Interestingly enough these same people are using drives (unbeknownst to them) that also have head...

Please set the record straight. Does WD green drives have head parking ?

Solid post. Is there actually any evidence (meaning data) that the head parking is even a real issue in terms of reliability? Its an interesting theory and all but until there is data behind it I don't think we can really draw any conclusions. My personal experience tells me that for storage...

Please set the record straight. Does WD green drives have head parking ?

I disagree. I have multiple hard drives of all speeds and the Green drives that I use for storage are all still alive and well after multiple years. I have lost a few 7200RPM drives. Doesn't mean that Green is good and Black is bad. You can't make an statistically significant conclusion...

That's an interesting opinion. I bet I have gotten more people into HTPC than most. Unfortunately, it takes money and time to test, compile, create, update and host this information. Just to expand my thought process a little more... Help With My Build

Agree about using the Intel stock cooler. Its great for HTPC and that case has excellent cooling. I like the H77 motherboards as a good solid option for HTPC.
