New build starts and stops, won't run

mfenn, I have it running OK now. Seems the SATA cables were the main problem to the drives. I removed all the cables I had previously installed and strapped down and replaced them with new ones in and I have all my drives running well. I'm leaving for a few days, but when I get home I plan to...

New build starts and stops, won't run

mfenn, The plastic cover that has the warning note on it. As for my older computer, they're basic disks. I had 3 SSDs and 3 platter HDDs in it originally. My boot disc, which does work, is a 30 GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, and it boots just fine. But I can't get any other hard drive (SSD or otherwise)...

New build starts and stops, won't run

mfenn.. You are right, I have a problem with the 1156 socket cover. When you lift it, the design is such that the cover itself can bend the pins if you so much as sneeze when you remove it... If you have seen it, you know what I mean. The pins are extremely thin and fragile. Oh well, I'll try...

New build starts and stops, won't run

Hi all, Well I got a new ASUS motherboard and re-built my machine. It runs!! Turns out I ended up with 3 or 4 bent pins on my new socket, too, just like the first one. But in any case I was able to straighten them up, and the machine booted right out of the gate!! Thanks for all your help on...

New build starts and stops, won't run

Hi all, The problem was the CPU socket - bent pins. Never had that kind of problem before, but with the i7 socket, if you take the cover off wrong, you're going to bend pins, so I ruined the Mobo without even trying :( I had no idea you could inflict so much damage with theses socket covers -...

New build starts and stops, won't run

mfenn, I hooked up the mobo with the 2 power connectors and shorted the front panel power pins to start the machine. It did the same thing - BUT I noticed a LED light that indicated a CPU problem. Looks like I have a bad CPU, so I'll need to do an RMA I guess. Thanks for your help. I'll write...

New build starts and stops, won't run

No, It never gets that far - it doesn't even get to where the fans keep turning - they stop almost immediately and then tries again... And no beep codes either - too quick for that before it starts over. Noel

New build starts and stops, won't run

Hi all, I just built a new computer and I'm having trouble with it. It starts and stops, starts and stops, in rapid succession, then does it all over again, but won't continue to run normally. Stats: MB ASUS P7P55D, CPU Intel i7-870, Memory 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3, GPU GeForce 460 SE and PSU...

How can I recover a "lost" HDD?

Thanks all for your comments. It's a WD 1TB Black, so it's supposed to be a good drive. From every indication I can find, it's dead. Even Killdisk won't touch it  I went to WD and they are giving me an "upgrade" to put it out of warranty - a 150GB raptor for $117, so I took it... I...

How can I copy iTunes Ratings from XP to Windows 7?

Hi, I have XP and 7 on separate HDDs on the same computer, each with iTunes on them, with my music on another HDD. Therefore, I can access my music on both copies of iTunes. But I'd like to copy my ratings from my XP iTunes to my 7 iTunes. Is there a file or files I can copy from the older...

Locked out of computer due to bad boot menu

Villatech, Thanks for all the help. Seems from what I read, I'll have to do a re-install of Windows 7 to get my boot menu back, so that's where I'll go. I had hoped to get out of that, but sometime there ain't a choice  Appreciate your tries to help me, though, noel54

Locked out of computer due to bad boot menu

Villatech, The XP image worked and now I'm booting into XP!! But my boot menu still doesn't show Windows 7, and I don't have an image for 7, so I may need to re-install it, otherwise I have no way to get to Windows - no boot menu with 7 on it I may try to edit the boot menu, but that's what...

Locked out of computer due to bad boot menu

Zillatech, When I boot up, instead of getting a boot menu, I get an admonition to insert my installation disc to do a repair, and then it can't, for some reason, do the repair. So I have no way to boot either my XP or my 7 OS... at least I can't think of any. Right now I'm trying to use an...

Locked out of computer due to bad boot menu

Hi all, I goofed and messed up my dual boot menu, so now I can't boot into either my XP or Windows 7 drive. My start-up screen tells me to insert my Windows 7 install disc and choose "Repair." Turns out it won't do that for some reason, so I'm up a tree... Is there any solution short of...

How do I implement TRIM in XP?

taltamir, Thanks, I'll look for the Intel SSD Toolbox and the wiper.exe app. Then as I understand it, set it to do a free space trim every week. I'm not sure it will work with the Kingston SSD, but I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks again, noel54

How do I implement TRIM in XP?

Folks, I just learned that Acronis True Image 11 doesn't support Windows 7. So that explains the trouble I had cloning my new SSD with 11... The newer version, Acronis True Image Home 2010 does, however. Looks like I need to upgrade. FWIW, noel54

How do I implement TRIM in XP?

Hi, I'm using a Kingston 30GB SSD as my boot drive in Windows XP. It supports TRIM, but how can I get it to implement TRIM while it's operational so I don't have to occasionally use HDDErase on it? Also, I did clone my previous HDD to it, but how do I know whether my cloning is aligned...

Do Kingston SSDs employ JMicron controllers?

Thanks everyone for your responses... :D I have just installed the drives and have them running well, so as you suggest I'll just enjoy them. I do have one other questions, if I may - I read that I should occasionally erase everything on the drives and replace the data from a backup. Is there...

Do Kingston SSDs employ JMicron controllers?

Hi, I just purchased 2 30GB Kingston SSDs to use as OS drives for my XP drive and for my Windows 7 drive. I've just read that SSDs that use JMicron controllers will wear faster due to the algorithms they use. I read on the Kingston site that their V series SSDs support TRIM. Can anybody tell...
