    OC'd 3570K enough for GTX 1080?

I have an i5-3570K at 4.2Ghz along with an R9 290. I'd been thinking of a GTX 1070 as an upgrade but now with the 1080's price cut, I might consider that instead. Is the overclocked Ivy Bridge i5 enough to keep up with a 1080, or would the 1080 be in some sense wasted? I use a 70" 4K display for...

Advice on upgrades for 4K set.

It's the cables, I think. I had one HDMI 2.0 cable that came with the TV from Vizio, two Amazon cables that said they were the latest standard and were 4K compatible, and a cable from SecuroMax that was well-rated on Amazon. I had been using the Vizio cable with an Amazon one originally. I...

Advice on upgrades for 4K set.

I think that's good advice on waiting for Vega, and I'm a little bit of a AMD loyalist anyway (haven't been with Nvidia since the Geforce FX!) Part of me hates giving up that "free" $25 from Amex though! I'll experiment around with the DP-HDMI adapter and see what I can do with it as well.

Advice on upgrades for 4K set.

It was indeed the Club3D adapter. I experienced the dropouts during games mainly and thought at one point it might have been the game, but then I experienced the same issue watching a ripped movie (albeit less frequently than in games, in which it was about every 3-5 minutes). That's a good...

Advice on upgrades for 4K set.

I can get a Founder's Edition 1070 for $315 from Newegg ($40 rebate, AMEX $25 off of $200). That seems to be a pretty good deal, but I wonder if an even better deal might be had in the future if AMD is competitive in 2017 at the higher end of the market.

Advice on upgrades for 4K set.

I game on an HTPC with an R9 290 and i5 3470K. I recently bought a Vizio M70-D3 as my new TV. Everything runs through a Denon S910 receiver which is fully HDMI 2.0a compliant, so the 290 is actually the weak link in the 4K chain now as it only has HDMI 1.4. What would be a worthwhile upgrade...

    Which RAM to get?

The i3-5020u supports 1600mhz at max, so it's as fast as it can be. Could possibly get tighter timings but that'd be it.

    Which RAM to get?

I recently got a deal on a laptop and it only has 4GB of RAM (1 stick of 1600Mhz DD3L.) The processor is a Core i3-5020U. Would I be better to buy a matched set of 2x4GB sticks and pull the stick it already has, or buy an 8GB stick for a total of 12GB? I'm specifically interested in the impact...

Trade dv7 for an Envy 17?

I have a Sandy Bridge-based HP dv7 that I'm going to have send back soon because of the chipset issue (I have till April 30th from everything I've read.) I purchased this for slightly over $900 after a $500 off $1399 coupon. The current system is a i7 2720QM, 8gb RAM, 640gb HD, DVDRW, 1gb...

Sandy bridge notebooks on amazon.com and newegg affected by intel bug?

The 17" HP laptops are affected--the hard drive is on channel 0, and the DVD or Blu Ray is on 4 while eSATA is on port 5. Port 1 is left open for the second drive bay. I received my DV7 on the 26th, and I'm still waiting to see what HP is going to do.

    Thoughts on this laptop

I'd gone by the spec sheet I'd seen on a few sites that first had the 4290US up for sale; they'd had DDR3 listed. Glad to see it's GDDR5. Other than the lack of USB 3.0, this is a very tempting system.

    Thoughts on this laptop

I've been looking at this same system--I'm no gamer but I don't mind having a little more horsepower than just integrated, no matter how much an improvement SB is in that department. The 6570M graphics card can use either GDDR5 or DD3; HP has gone with the less expensive DDR3 route, at least...

    Deciphering mobile graphics-6570M

I'm in the market for a new DTR laptop and spend a small but not insignificant time playing PC games--mainly somewhat older titles. (Civ 5 is the only PC game I've bought in 2010). I currently am using a Q6600@3ghz with a Radeon 4850 512mb, but with my kids getting older I don't have the luxury...

    wifi for apartment complex

He's going to need a new router anyway--the one he's got is a loaner while he's getting settled in. Just wanted him to get one that wouldn't repeat the problem that this one had. The router works just fine in a single home, which is where I'll take it back.

    wifi for apartment complex

My brother just moved into a new apartment complex and isn't getting a good connection from his old router. There are a lot of competing wireless routers installed around him. He has a laptop, phone, and maybe one other device. All are standard wireless b/g/n; none are dual-band that I know of...

    Nook Color

I'd have been fine with a single dead pixel in an unobtrusive spot, but near dead center was going to bother me. I'd been a little worried they wouldn't do a return for a single pixel--Apple's iPad policy is 2 dead pixels minimum, if you can believe the leaked documents. Returned it today for a...

    Nook Color

I just picked up my Nook Color tonight, and upon turning it on for the first time I noticed a dead pixel near the middle of the screen. I'm afraid it might drive me crazy--but I get along fine with smartphone screens that are smudged to hell. I'm fearful of exchanging it only to find the next...

Just pulled the trigger on a 65"

I'll say it's one of the best electronics purchases I've made--you'll enjoy it I'm sure. The delivery guys did help me unbox it to do a quick inspection. The screen looked good and I sent them on their way. Later I found a small panel on the bottom had popped out, but it was easily pushed back...

Picked up a Samsung UN55C7000 LED TV, Calibration settings?

My 65" Mitsubishi arrives tomorrow morning. I ordered it last Friday afternoon with free shipping. It's being delivered by Pilot Air and Freight. Harmony remote

I got the 670 from Amazon yesterday. Set it up, and apart from a few quirks that I'll get used to, I am very impressed and pleased with it. Like it's been said by so many before, you wonder why you didn't have one sooner. For $66 (refurbished) it can't be beat.

    Harmony remote

I'm overwhelmed with remotes on the coffee table, so I'm finally going to get a Harmony to replace all/most of them. I'm considering a refurb 670 or the Xbox 360 edition remote. I'm not sure which one to go with--the 670 is a little more but I don't know if it does anything to warrant the extra...

Windows 7 pre-order pricing (Full versions: Premium £/?49.99, Pro £/?99.99)

Vista licenses didn't allow you to move 32bit to 64; I have 32bit Vista Ultimate and to move to 64 bit would require me to buy a completely new license. It would be nice if the upgrade discs allowed a completely clean install without upgrading from an existing install the way Vista upgrade discs do.

I've had an RCA 50" HD50LPW162 since October of 2004; it's been used regularly without a single problem and is amazingly still on its original lamp. Only the remote control has worn out. Homework research help: Need a primary source

There aren't many true primary sources for Alexander--the ancient sources we have, the best of which is Arrian's Anabais, which you've found as The Campaigns of Alexander, was written centuries afterward. Arrian's work is taken from contemporary accounts that are now lost to us. This link takes...

    DLP vs Plasma

Agreed--the settings used in stores aren't a good way to judge a screen. Indeed, if you were going to buy a TV based on those settings, there's no reason to buy quality at all. Why calibrate when all you want is a giant light bulb? I think the plasmas have more "pop" because of the reflective...

    DLP vs Plasma

I'm a big fan of DLP, and I think it represents one of the best values in HDTV. I know they don't have the appeal of a thin LCD or plasma, but you can get truly large, good looking screens for much less. That being said, regardless of TV type, I would say Samsung>Vizio or Sanyo. A Samsung...

Why are some old movies taking so long to come out in HD?

They're plenty dim though--how else to explain The Love Guru? Seriously, though, I don't disagree in the least with your analysis that Transformers will make more money than Lawrence of Arabia. But if you're going to do a "prestige" title, it might be better to do it along the lines I said...

Why are some old movies taking so long to come out in HD?

It may be better business in fact to get older, classic films out early. A hypothesis: early adopters of these formats are either film lovers, videophiles, or both. Early discs are sold with higher profit margins. A lot of older films only appeal to the film lovers crowd, so the time to get them...

Why are some old movies taking so long to come out in HD?

If you look here, there are quite a few classic movies that have been announced. I think, especially with older films, a lot of care has to be taken to get a transfer right, as HD will show flaws much more clearly. A lot of these older films weren't necessarily preserved that well and thus it...

    popping sound from speaker

Tried it at half volume and 40%--could still hear it at it, although its volume decreased, proportionately it seems, with the sound. That's probably as low as I can go and still hear anything at all that I could directly attribute to that speaker.

    popping sound from speaker

I thought the issue with the 605 was when the advanced audio codecs were bitstreamed, not over PCM. Is that correct? I'll check my firmware just in case--however, I bought mine in November '07 so maybe mine had the firmware already updated. It's not ridiculously loud--I'd say it's slightly...

    popping sound from speaker

I swapped the rear channels, and sent the right rear channel through the left rear channel's wall plugs. The problem repeated EXACTLY with different in-wall wires and a different speaker. I guess it could be an issue with the connection on the back of the receiver for the right rear (that...

    popping sound from speaker

I'm a piano player, and started out classical until Elton and Billy Joel corrupted me. Thanks for the suggestion--the back of my receiver isn't easy to get to right...

    popping sound from speaker

The Blu Ray of this disc was released months after the DVD, so I found my old DVD copy of this concert (wow what a difference--seeing it after the Blu Ray version is like the difference between DVD and Youtube). The DTS 5.1 mix has exactly the same issue.
