8th Annual Anandtech Tax Time Thread (OP Updated 14th Jan)

My girlfriend and I (I'm male, so this isn't a same-sex thing) registered as domestic partners this year in Colorado, initially for the sake of insurance. Does this enable us to file jointly, or do we need to wait until we actually get married for that?

ATOT effect needed - help support some troops

Afternoon crew bump. Thanks to those who have voted thus far! I promise this will be my last bump if I continue to not get replies :(

how the hell do you get people to respond on Craigslist?

if your email signature/name gives away too much information about you, you could be getting intentionally ignored. I know it's not legal in many places, but it happens. I had a lot better luck getting initial replies when I stopped showing my name on my emails. still got shot down several...

Would you register YourMName.com w/ poll

same :( Worst part is, it wasn't even being used for several years, and now only sort of is. I'm hoping they forget to renew... in 2014 :P I do have firstlast.com though.

Ran out of contact solution: sleep with them or use some old ass solution?

Just sleep with them in, it's not the end of the world every now and then. worst case scenario, you'll wake up and they'll feel kind of stiff & rubbery; just grab some solution on your way to work/school/whatever and rinse the contacts off. Also, i can't say enough good things about Bausch &...

ATOT effect needed - help support some troops

Thanks! From what the email thread I got forwarded indicates, this option was in 7th place this morning, and dropped to 12th (as of the time I'm writing this). It's got to be fairly close for it to fall so far in such a relatively short period of time. There are about 3 days of voting left...

ATOT effect needed - help support some troops

My younger brother joined the Marines almost 2 years ago, and just got his first deployment out east this month. Since then various family members have been forwarding me all sorts of "support the troops" types of messages, but this one really stood out to me...

    Re-designing a form - need help from you GUI-guys

I mostly agree with the aove 2; I probably wouldn't change the structure at this point. Though if you just wanted to add some color, or gradients to the title bars, or fix some of your very minor alignment issues, etc - basically pretty it up without changing the flow - I don't see why that...

    Good source control solution?

Anybody have any opinions on worthwhile Source Control solutions that work well for a casual coder? I need: -Free (this part is key :)) -Can be hosted on Windows Server 2008 64 bit -It'd be great if it could integrate with Visual Studio 2010, xCode, and Eclipse. -Client component(s)...

    ***Official*** HTC EVO 4G thread

Well, today my phone pretty much sat on my desk from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and was at 10% battery. I used it once to check facebook, and another time to take a couple of pictures and send them out using gmail. That's it; not a damn thing else.

    ***Official*** HTC EVO 4G thread

I've had my EVO since launch and am approaching the end of my return period... the battery life is really killing me, and I can't decide if I'd rather just deal with it, or return this and go pick up a Droid Incredible...

Canon people, what do you think the DSLR roadmap looks like? Thoughts and questions..

I don't think Canon is done throwing punches quite yet. The D3s, D90, and D300/s are all still very formidable cameras. Canon, as usual, is hitting back with more megapixels, but not making similarly huge improvements in other areas. The 7D, while a superb camera (I sure love mine :)), isn't...

You think they're bad, look at Sony's lineup ;)

Canon 430EX II or Sigma EF-530 DG Super for Canon 7D?

Looking to pick up a mid-range flash for some non-professional portrait work (friends, family, etc) for my 7D. I'm leaning towards the Sigma, as it seems like I can get more features for a better price, but I'm not 100% convinced yet. Anybody have any input? Going to pull the trigger on...

    Canon T1i usb cable question

Monoprice is my favorite online story, period. Their only drawback is shipping, but if you're ordering enough cables, the savings more than make up for the high base cost of shipping (like $6, then a few pennies more as the size/weight of your order increases). Replaced all the Cat-5 cable...

Road trip - one photo per minute?

Get a cheap Canon point and shoot supported by CHDK, install CHDK, find or write a script to take a picture at your desired interval. Done. I did it with my a710 a couple of years ago :)

7th Annual Anandtech Tax Time Thread

Thanks. And yeah yeah, we know. we're planning to this year; we're just not into the traditional idea of marriage, so we've been thinking on how to do it 'our way'. I'll be buying her a piano in place of an engagement ring in the spring :).

First time home buyer - thoughts/tips? UPDATE- found one!

There are a few organizations in Colorado that offer first time home buyers classes at no cost. They're great sources of information, and might bring up things you've never thought of (you'd be surprised at how much free, or interest free money you can get in Colorado to help with closing...

7th Annual Anandtech Tax Time Thread

Question: My girlfriend and I closed on our first home in November. Can we each claim the $4,000 tax credit as if we were a married couple filing separately, or should only one of us claim the full $8000, or should we go about this in another manner entirely? We're both on the...

    online printing - pic size?

Well, from what I understand (again, any pros please step in) 300 dots (pixels) per inch is what's largely considered to be ideal printing resolution. At larger size prints that's sometimes not possible to achieve. I personally haven't printed anything below 200 DPI; most of mine are around...

    online printing - pic size?

file size doesnt matter (sort of; I'm going to be corrected, I'm sure ;)). What you want to be concerned with is resolution. Ideally, for 4x6 prints, you want them to measure 1800 pixels on the long side, by 1200 pixels on the sort side.

    Grand Canyon

Great shot, must've been a helluva view in person. I'd love to see this same shot with some tasteful HDR. Nothing wrong with yours, I'd just be curious to see how that'd look.

    ~$1250 for lenses/equipment - input?

Yeah, I'm mostly set on the new glass right now because of my new Tamron toy; I've used the slower lenses for the better part of a year, so the constant f/2.8 Tamron has been a lot of fun. I'm not in any rush to go full frame; I figure by the time the next 5D comes out I'll be more content with...

    ~$1250 for lenses/equipment - input?

Not a bad idea, though I'm not entirely sure I'm ready for that yet... I was considering picking up a full frame when the 5D mk II's replacement comes out, either snatching up a used 5d mk II, or whatever replaces it. I think I'd rather work towards getting a full set of nicer glass, then get a...

    ~$1250 for lenses/equipment - input?

Yeah I definitely have more lenses than I need - I only use 3 of them - but like I said, my girlfriend has also been getting into the hobby, so she tends to take out the xsi and the lenses I don't use, so i've been less motivated to sell some than I should be.

    ~$1250 for lenses/equipment - input?

So I recently bought my first house with my girlfriend, and we decided to each take ~$750 of that $8k tax rebate and use it for something nice/fun for ourselves before dumping the rest back into savings/home stuff. I'll be combining the cash with some Amazon gift cards I received for xmas, or...

Any suggestions for can't miss picture spots in Colorado

Try the Rocky Mountain Oysters :) As for picture spots, really, pull out a map and pick any of the smaller mountain towns, the drives are usually full of great pictures, and a lot of the towns themselves can be fun walking around. Estes Park is a little overdone, but provides plenty of...

Suggestions for Canon 7D starter kit?

A local shop by me sold the 7D with the 18-135mm lens instead of the 28-135mm. They also included the hood, a filter, and a spare battery. According to them, it's a fancier bundle that Canon offers through smaller retailers (i.e., not Best Buy). Cost $100 more than the 28-135mm kit.

    Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.10 MP 3.0" DSLR Camera $629 at BuyDig.com

Nice price. Pair this with an $80-$100 (new; used is much cheaper) 50mm f/1.8 lens and you've got a sexy kit. It's a fixed focal length sure, but you'll learn much more about photography like that :)

PC user looking for a mac

I'm looking to pick up a Macbook. This will be my first in-depth experience with the Mac OS in the last decade. It's not that I've hated macs; I've just never had a use for them. Mostly I'm looking for a laptop that I can do the following on: -Minor photo editing (currently use Lightroom 2 on...

PC keyboard similar to the Mac wired USB keyboard?

Just moved into a new house, got a new desk, looking to tone down the clutter. One thing I need is a less bulky keyboard. My Logitech G15 has been great; but it's huge, garish, and I haven't used the macro buttons in ages. So what I'm looking for is a slim, no-frills keyboard. The Apple...
