Broken tire air compressor, small electric motor whines

Not a car thread for The Garage, but a thread about something I use for my car/bike! Anyone have one of those little electric air compressors you use to inflate tires die on you? Mine was this one or very similar, not that old: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...pf_rd_i=507846 I...

car navigation: phone GPS vs stand-alone unit

I'm thinking about replacing my crappy Sony Ericsson T610, but I'm also thinking about buying a GPS unit for my car. And I see that some phones have GPS capabilities and even turn-by-turn navigation, so perhaps buying two devices could be avoided if a phone has a decent solution. How do you...

Time for a new rig, should've done it long ago

I'll try to keep this short and to the point. And first, thanks a ton to anyone who posts hardware since I've been out of the loop. 1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing. Software development, gaming, web surfing, servers of various kinds...

It's reaaallly hard to get one of these and I have friends that sadly didn't make it. I had to compete with people from a lot of other great schools for a spot too. Apparently my resume was strong and they liked talking to me. This summer is going to ROCK! They're located in Fairfax, VA (near...

    Interesting C++ interview question

Actually, this probably isn't even C++ specific. Take any input (float, int, etc) and multiply it by 5, without using the * operator in two steps. My first thought before he added the "in two steps" bit was just add the input number together five times =). Not the right answer though.

recent laptop screen issue, red+green verticle line on right side

Recently, and I can't think of an event that made it start happening, my laptop screen started displaying a 1-pixel width verticle red line with a similar green line just like it on the far right side of the screen. Luckily the lines are a bit out of the way, but they are still really annoying...

accessing my webserver from behind the router

So my roommate with a nice Linksys router left. Now I'm left with two dumb old routers that seem to have the same problem with my webserver. They'll forward WAN http port 80 requests to the webserver just fine. But LAN requests from behind the router for the WAN IP (resolved /w DNS or...

How often to get an oil change

This is for a 2000 honda civic. My dad insists that I only need to get the oil changed every time the Maintenance Required light goes from green to yellow. Of course most would agree that the oil lube shops want you to go more often than you need to. I think they claim something like...

Game AI Class: Know an open source game that needs AI/better AI?

This semester I'm taking a class on Game AI. For the big project it is preferable to find an existing open source game that either lacks AI, has AI that could use big improvements, or has decent AI but could have a different AI implemented that changes the gameplay experience for the better...

    bad artifacting with 9700 pro

This Powercolor 9700 Pro worked well for a couple years, then started artifiacting. At fist it was rare, and could usually be fixed by a system shutdown. It started happening more over time, but I could still fix it with a reboot/replug monitor/reseat the card. But now I can't get it to...

    desktop dead?

It's sad, but it seems like the first rig I ever build (with the help of AT!) is dying. Most of the hardware is about four years old. First it was randomly freezing, and at first only in Warcraft III. Then I'd notice it was frozen in the morning after I woke up. No BSOD, no error, just...

To someone familiar with DSL (and maybe Bellsouth)

So from my normal speeds of 2.5-3Mbps download and decent pings of under 100 I sometimes go to an abysmal 100-300Kbps download and 1000+ms pings. I call to figure out what's going on. Fast forward 20 minutes of my wasted time, the rep gets a line technician to run a test. Wow, magically...
