copying recovery partition to new hard drive???

I have a compaq presario with a failing drive. I don't have recovery discs for it, and the recovery partition is intact, so I want to copy everything to another hard drive. But that hasn't worked out so far. The original drive is 500gb. As an experiment, I tried to copy the entire disk...

Now $145: Retail 3TB Hitachi shipped Amazon

I believe "coolspin" can continuously vary between 5400 and 7200rpm, so .... ideal for archives, but probably inconsistent performance versus a straight 7200 drive.

Yes, they'll absolutely do everything they can to push Win8 on students. And the sick and elderly.

Hitachi is exiting the hard drive business, and the Deskstar line has had a troubled life.

SATA/IDE USB 2.0 adapter with power brick $9 shipped

What power brick? Nothing is mentioned in the description or specs... or pictures. What connector does it have? In the case of the 44-pin connector, you'd be unable to use it at all.

IOGEAR GCS661U USB Laptop KVM Switch with File Transfer: $4.99 AC FS

This sale is posted all over the place - continually. Honestly, I don't understand the point of it. Why can't they just run VNC and do exactly the same thing over ethernet? Why do you need the device?

    APC Back-UPS BR1000G Line-interactive UPS - 1 kVA

On this RS series, is it a simple +12v boost or -12v buck, or does it correct voltage continuously *up to* +/- 12v?

Phenom II X4 955 BE CPU, $112 at Microcenter

You might be thinking of tray or non-retail, or the old FXs. That's the standard fan they give for all 125w processors. Anyway, I'd expect that we won't see *really* good prices until after june when BD is released.

    Newegg - Logitech Illuminated Keyboard - $40 AR + FS, G500 mouse $35 AR + FS

It's a great keyboard, and illumination is a useful feature, but I was disappointed in how it looked. The light squirts out not just from the key labels, but everywhere -- between/underneath the keys, etc, and its kind of uneven.

    Energy Tak5 Classic + receiver 400bux

You could still have fairly good peak output, but without seeing what capacitors it has, I donno. Considering that this is yamaha, and the limited power output, I'm betting that these are T-amps, such as the yamaha TA2020. Which are excellent btw, albeit very low power. So the Energy's are...

    HP ZR24w 24-inch (1920x1200) DisplayPort IPS LCD Monitor @ $350 AR FS at macmall.com

When was this monitor introduced? There's no specs on luminance, transition speed, and at 3000:1 *dynamic* CR seems a little shy of cutting edge.

phenom 905e $95 shipped possibly less

I think we're assuming that that performance will plateau at some point, because some component has been 'maxed out'. In order for that to be the behavior, all components must be entirely dependent on each other, and I don't think that's actually case. Actually it's not clear at all why he's...

phenom 905e $95 shipped possibly less

I wouldn't consider the CPU at all for HTPC purposes, because modern GPUs do a far better job at processing HD video than the cpu will. There are some filters / post-processing that will tax the CPU (eg., motion smoothing), but generally if you're seeing significant CPU utilization when...

phenom 905e $95 shipped possibly less

This is actually a great question. Skunk+'s point is valid, but what you're asking would be such a useful thing to have in reviews, benchmarks, etc. On the other hand, I'm not actually sure the performance plateaus quite the way you're suggesting, because each handle different things that can...

phenom 905e $95 shipped possibly less

I think most people here already have an investment in the am2/am3 platform, not to mention want to save money, and amd is usually better bang-for-buck than intel. Btw, you are aware that the phenom uses ddr3, right?

phenom 905e $95 shipped possibly less

I have a wild theory about overclocking low-wattage chips. Supposedly, AMD has been using on-chip thermoelectric junctions to aid in localized cooling. They were issued some patents for this about 7(?) years ago and I remember seeing electron microscope pictures of oddly shaped...

phenom 905e $95 shipped possibly less

Why would these be bad for overclocking? You would think it would have a ton of headroom in speed, voltage and wattage. I heard this once about low-power cpus, but I don't understand why it would be. Same chip, no?

    Antec Kuhler H2O 620 - $69.99 + Shipping

Does this come with the fluid sealed in the unit? Can you detach the hoses? I'd love the simplicity of a kit, but might want to expand it later with standard parts (a 2nd radiator, pump, vga, reservoir, ice bucket, whatever).

    ASUS RT-N16 802.11b/g/n - $74.99 shipped @ NewEgg

This was a useful read. I'm a bit surprised and disappointed in their performance findings. I would expect better routing performance from a fast processor and some wireless throughput benefit from 40mhz channels and 3 antennas.

using a laptop am2 cpu in desktop am2 mobo...??

I have a number of am2/am3 boards, and none of them appear to specifically support a particular ultra low-power AM2 chip in bios (22w athlon ii). I think it's actually a laptop chip. What can I expect if I try and use it? Do I just need to manually set voltages, etc?

Pretty Hot Deal on JC Penney's suits

I would recommend shopping around before hitting a deal like this, and get an idea of the prices, fashion and values. The value in a suit is in making the best first impression, and if the person you're shaking hands with knows a cheap suit when he sees one, then you might as well go in hot pants.

All Verizon "Droid" phones $0.01 w/new 2 year contract @ Amazon

How does the data/internet work with these plans? They don't mention any data rates, limits, etc. I'm a little dubious; even 450 min is a little high for me and I'll do maybe 40 texts a month. Why would I pay $60? I'm also aghast that texting alone costs $20 a month. That's by far the...
