Gonna try running a Firewire 800 SSD as my iMac boot drive

@Eug, when you get the drive and enclosure, do tell how the real-world Yosemite performance compares to the original Seagate HDD. This does seem easier than replacing the HDD internally, although I am still inclined to do so mainly because of the noise and heat it produces.

Just got my first Mac. I need to upgrade OS X

I haven't experienced any WiFi issues in 10.11. As for the VPN software, did you try disabling rootless? As I mentioned in my post above, I already have 10.10.4 installed on the 9400M, and it's supported by Yosemite as well as El Capitan. Earlier Intel integrated GPUs are not supported by...

Just got my first Mac. I need to upgrade OS X

My late 2008 MacBook Air with the same GPU has the following OS X versions installed, in the order of most use: 1. 10.6.8 2. 10.11 DP2 3. 10.10.4 & 10.9.5 It's not my main Mac and used for basic tasks, so I'm fine with the limitations in Snow Leopard. 10.11 runs faster than Yosemite, and...

Will we see an 8k iMac?

It won't be happening anytime soon. With 5K still fairly new, the effort and expense of fitting 8K into a 27" display isn't worth it at this point. Not to mention that the quality gain won't be nearly as much as 1440p to 5K. The only new iMac display I expect to be announced later this year...

Not quite sure... I agree it once was more efficient, but I had switched to Safari by last October.

    New iPod Touch specs tomorrow...guesses?

Looks like you got your wish. http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/07/15Apple-Introduces-The-Best-iPod-touch-Yet.html It's good to see the iPod is still a priority, although only giving the Nano and Shuffle new colors is a bit underwhelming.

    Mac Mini Memory Upgrade

No, the RAM in the late 2014 Mac mini is soldered and can't be upgraded.

Should I try the public beta of El capitan?

Same on my 13" late 2013 MBP, although the performance is a little better than Yosemite. The 10.11 betas have been fairly stable for me, although I generally don't touch my main Mac with betas.

They downgraded the GPUs in the iMac?

M290MX? I assume you mean the 775M/780M high-end GPU options. You are correct in your assumption that the non-Retina models are being phased out. I have a Retina and the screen is stunning.

Testing Netflix HD performance on old Macs: Chrome wins.

Testing Netflix HD performance on old Macs: Chrome wins.

This is one of the few times I actually use Chrome, for Netflix on my 2010 Mac mini. HTML5 Netflix in Safari requires a Sandy Bridge CPU or later.

    MacBook Air went crazy

The RAM has failed, and since the RAM is soldered, the entire logic board will need to be replaced if you hope to ever use it again.

Using iMac for Xbox One Monitor @ Real Estate Pipeline Office w/ Multiple iMacs

No. Unlike the earlier 2009/2010 27" iMacs which used Mini DisplayPort, iMacs since the mid 2011 require a Thunderbolt port/cable for Target Display Mode.

Anyone install Yosemite on October 2009 Mini?

Yosemite runs fine on my 2010 Mac mini 2.66, although Mavericks/Yosemite generally aren't as quick as Snow Leopard, especially on mechanical drives. You'd have to make a bootable USB installer for Yosemite, or if you still have the Snow Leopard disk you could install it and update to Yosemite.

Is there any way to rename 'App Store...' in OS X Yosemite?

The way it was done in Mavericks was left from a time when "Software Update" was its own standalone app (obviously before the App Store came along). Nowadays it makes sense to associate updates with the App Store, because that's how they're delivered. The 10.10.3 beta now labels the update count...

iOS apps can now be 4 GB.

Agreed that it would be nice if Apple hadn't put the same old 1 GB of RAM in the iPhone 6. More RAM would allow for more apps/tabs to be stored without restarting/reloading, an issue I do encounter as well. But, how else are they going to get people to upgrade to the 6s? Still on the 5s, will...

    Getting a hand-me-down MacBook Pro

I always run at native on my 13" rMBP despite the small amount of screen space because at the scaled resolutions quality does degrade close to the pixel level. I make up for it by using most of my apps in full screen mode. However, even at 1440x900 HiDPI scaled down to 2560x1600, it still...

What can I do with an old iMac?

My 27" 2010 iMac has a 7200 RPM HDD on Yosemite, really slows it down. I couldn't even imagine going back to an HDD in my main machine, which I am proud to say I haven't had to do since 2012. Same goes for retina displays, a must have for me as the difference is huge.

What can I do with an old iMac?

None of the thin iMacs have i3, although the thicker ones released in 2011 do. Edit: Forgot about the early 2013, that would count. There's always an underpowered low-end version of the 21.5", now it's the mid 2014. Snow Leopard or later can update directly to Yosemite if it is supported by...
