Has anyone here tried to trickle charge a car battery off of the 12 volt rail of an old PSU?

Serious question? Stupid question? Rigging up a molex -> alligator clip cable is easy enough, as is shorting the appropriate leads on the mobo connector to turn the PSU on. What am I not accounting for, aside from the elements?

So, Where to shop for WC parts these days?

I'm having a semi-serious dilemma here. I used to shop the crap out of Sidewinder, but it doesn't look like they're what they used to be. No updates to their Facebook page in over a year, unanswered complaints, spotty inventory... Petra's used to be good, their URL redirects to Sidewinder...

    New revision 285s

The boards, they are a-changin'... Well, provided eVGA doesn't mind me swapping out their stock goop for a blob of Ceramique, I've got a 285 on the way in place of my 260 c216. For about $80 shipped (not bad). The replacement will be this. All I know about these new 285s is that they...

So, just what good is AHCI?

TBH, I thought my system performance was worse when I did my last install of Vista with this mode enabled in BIOS. I don't run RAID, and I don't have any e-SATA devices, but hey, things can change. First difference I noticed was a loss of desktop snappiness, esp. in Explorer. In AHCI mode...

Learning as I go... the going has been pretty easy so far, which is good, but as they say, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing  I'd like to know if I'm completely off the mark, or pointed generally in the right direction. Equipment: ASUS P5Q Pro, latest BIOS (1603), Q6600 G0...

8800GTX caught in the middle of CPU upgrades

Heh. When I got it, it was more than my Opteron 165 could feed. It still is. I've pulled the trigger on a Q6600, and it seems that my GTX may now not quite do it justice. I'm in no position to splurge on a 280, but a 260 for a little over 200 bucks is tempting. It seems to thwack an 8800...

Q6600 Cooling: Storm Rev 2 Vs. (old) Apogee

Thinking about retiring the Opty 165 soon, so of course the loop needs to be torn down, new hoses cut, etc... I seem to remember when Quads first came out, the Apogee GT was outperforming the Storm by a bit due to the extra die size of the Quad vs. the jet impingement pattern of the Storm/larger...

ABC News: Obama overtakes Superdelegate Lead

Story Huh. All things considered, it's interesting to see ABC come out with this headline. DemConWatch still has HRC with a lead of 7.5, but this has more or less been going in only one direction since the beginning of campaigning in earnest. I think this is over by 5/20, whether...

I'm talking about the "trick" where you take a dull pencil, etc. wrapped in some moist cloth and rub the stuck pixel. I don't believe everything I read on the intarweb, so if anyone can comment on this, that would be great. If it DOES work, what kind of force should be used? About as much as...

    20WMGX2 and 4:3 scaling

I'm almost sold on this baby, the only caveat I had about it was that it's been said that it doesn't do 4:3 scaling very well. OTOH, I had read some reports of people getting the scaling to work by twiddling a few settings. So here I sit in front of one (and hot damn, it IS a nice panel) but...

Can't seem to find much discussion on them. You can see them in the picture here, they're just to the right of the square portion of the retention bracket. Kinda brownish-looking with 2 little white blots. Those are the switches. The whole thing has a little piece of protective film over it...

    PSA: ATi Silencer 5 + X850XT + DFI Ultra-D = Problem

Have a look at a pic of the Ati Silencer 5. See the little plastic nubs for the screws around the fan housing? The bottom one smacks into the HSF for the NF4 chip on the DFI Ultra-D. You can put the vid card + Silencer into the other full length PCI-E slot, but if you have a medium to large card...

    Hardware back from the grave!

This is just damn strange. Almost 2 years ago now, in about April of 2003, I had my VisionTek GF4 Ti4600 card out of the system in order to clean the dust out of its HSF. When I put it back in, all it would do is display a solid baby blue screen. I tried a bunch of stuff, cleaned the edge...
