New system build after 4+ years

Excellent. I'll take a look at that thread. Appreciate the response sir! As far as the GPU goes however, my 290x is still going strong with any modern game i throw at it....but that is at my current resolution of 2560x1440. Wondering if I would need to step up to an RX 480 or something to...

New system build after 4+ years

Hello Anandtech Community, I am beginning to do some research on parts for a new build. As I have not built a system in over 4 years I'm completely and utterly out of the loop. There are two main drivers for building a new system. First, certain parts of my motherboard have failed over time...

    Got The Upgrade Bug...

Excellent Ken. I think I will probably wait it out for the next few months and see what the new gen cards bring us. Hopefully I can be patient enough :)

    Got The Upgrade Bug...

I could wait a few months until the new generation GPUs shake out but if I'm going to get a big performance boost from say doing another 7970 in crossfire then that would make the most sense since the cost would be probably sub $200 for another one. If the benefits aren't as good as going with...

    Got The Upgrade Bug...

I am looking to do an upgrade on my current build. I was thinking about upgrading mainly the GPU or CPU or perhaps both. If I can get away with upgrading my GPU only that would be nice to save some cash, but I'd be willing to upgrade the CPU as well if it makes sense. Here is my current...

    New build for gaming

Got everything installed this weekend. Went with my final build above which was the i5-2500K, ASRock Z77 Extreme4, and Corsair XMS3 16GB. This thing is running like a dream. Thanks for all the help. I truly appreciate it!

    New build for gaming

The sticks I am looking at are rated at 1.5v : http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0382999 Are there any other options at MicroCenter that you think might fit the bill better for my build? Thanks for the additional help again ;)

    New build for gaming

Ok I just found out I have a MicroCenter local to me (I just moved from the east coast to Minnesota). They have what i want to build much cheaper than Newegg. This is what I'm thinking now: 2500K - $179.99 ASrock Z77 Extreme4 - $89.99 (combo with chip) Corsair 16GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) (Four...

    New build for gaming

So one quick question - is the main difference between the 2500k and 2600k just the hyper threading support? Just doing some final research on the builds suggested by you and I'm going to consider looking for some used gear here in the trade section as well as new parts. Thanks again!

    New build for gaming

Awesome! Thanks so much. I really appreciate it! Not a huge deal that it would most likely be 2 separate pairs if I bought 2 packs to get to 16GB?

    New build for gaming

Thanks lehtv :) I now have a good idea of what to do. I read some reviews on that ASRock board and it looks really really solid. I might take a chance and give them a try with this next build.

    New build for gaming

Really good stuff guys. I think I will go with the 4x4 ram config to save some cash. I definitely want to have that 16GB for my VMs as I like to be able to dedicate at least 2GB to each system I have running. With 16gb vs 8GB I can squeeze in a few more VMs for my lab. I have never...

    New build for gaming

What started as a question about going to a crossfire setup on my current platform, has now brought me to thinking about a new build on some of my core components (cpu, mobo, ram, heatsink). I will be selling my current CPU w/ heatsink, MOBO, and RAM to make up some of the upgrade costs. Here...

Looking to finally upgrade video card

Why would you rate the 6950 over the 570 - even after flashing? And can all 6950 boards be flashed....I think I read that some of them don't flash as easily. Thanks.

Looking to finally upgrade video card

Wow thanks all. Love all of the opinions. So before I go through with this I'm gathering that the 570 here is probably my best option for getting a good two more years of gaming on my current spec'd system? And this 570 wont be held back with my Q9560 I am assuming? Thanks again for all the...

Looking to finally upgrade video card

I posted a few weeks back and everyone here was a great help. Still haven't replaced my 4870 that has died and wanted to fish for a few more opinions. My budget has changed too and I can move it up if necessary. I'd like to make this card last as well because I only replace about every 2-3...

    New video card purchase

We'll I got the Q9650 for $225 - just have to wait for it now. So now that I have more headroom I was leaning towards the 6950 2GB.....any more suggestions? Thanks all.

    New video card purchase

OK so if I went with the a CPU upgrade and new GPU sounds like I could breathe some new life into my P5B Deluxe. I was thinking a Q9550 or Q9650 with a newer GPU (not sure whether to go ATI or NVIDIA for the GPU yet). Looks like the P5B Deluxe can take up to a Q9650. Am I off base with this...

    New video card purchase

@toytoa Yeah. It's an E6400. I couldn't even play BC2 until I overclocked the CPU to around 3.0. I get pretty damn good performance out of it but its definitely starting to get a little long in the tooth :)

    New video card purchase

You guys have me thinking now that even if I upgrade the GPU, my Core2Duo is going to hold me back in the end anyway - which is what I suspected. Man now I'm thinking I might just wait a few months and do an entire system overhaul. Thanks so far for all the input guys. It has been of great...

    New video card purchase

So it sounds like the best bet is to go forward with a 5850 possibly, or just save up a little more and upgrade the cpu/mb with a new video card purchase? I'll wait for a few more responses before going and making the decision. Thanks for the help all :)

    New video card purchase

Been out of the game for a while. My 4870 512mb just died on me and I'm looking to just upgrade my GPU - don't have the money to do a full system upgrade so I was looking to get something that wouldn't be bottlenecked by my current specs. My system specs are older but the 4870 was doing pretty...
