I agree. I've never been about the aesthetics of hardware (i.e. I don't like turning my comp into a disco ball full of lights and lasers) but that Zotac looks pretty slick.
The Monsoon III LT instructions amount to nothing more than a 5x7 card with scribbles. :P
Dropping the sound card down actually dropped my temps by about 1-2c. I think it made SOME difference, but it's really not a whole lot to accurately measure. If you're curious, here's an updated pic...
Yea, I had wondered if rotating the HSF would block the first memory slot or not. The HSF itself is relatively equal on all sides. The picture makes it look a little more rectangular than it really is. It's still a consideration to keep in mind, nonetheless.
You're probably right though. The...
HSF alignment:
Horizontal or vertical?
I went vertical with a push-pull (Vigor Monsoon III LT) configuration thinking the heat would be pushed up through the massive 230mm fan. BUT, I've seen a lot of others going with a horizontal alignment and it's making me second guess myself...
Thanks for the replies guys. I understand an array doesn't replace off-site backups whatsoever. I was more or less looking for an upgrade path once I out grow my 4x250gb raid-5 array. By the time I out grow it we'll probably be a year or so down the road but it did get me wondering about how...
aamsel,
I don't mean to hijack your question, but is there a tool that will get the serial # (batch) from your CPU? I'm curious which batch I got but don't feel like pulling the HSF/grease, etc.
I should have thought about it earlier. :(
I'm new to SSDs. I understand the majority of their pros and cons but haven't dug into the details of the technology enough to answer my own question.
Is there a benefit in creating a redundant array with SSDs? We all know magnetic disks are prone to many physical woes that could cause drive...
Yea, I don't doubt I could run 4ghz. I'm just concerned about the cooling. At 4ghz it's running 1.287v but sitting around 82c after running Prime95 for 5 minutes. The cooler is a Vigor Monsoon III LT. It still seems high to me. Temps were even 1-2c higher with the case panel off lol.
The cutout on the HAF 932 didn't match up with the P6X58D unfortunately. I was bummed at first, but figured I don't plan on pulling the board much anyhow.
Ah, I completely read your question wrong sorry. I haven't had much sleep these last few days.
I haven't looked at exactly how USB 3.0 is implemented on the board, but from what I do remember reading there are only a few ports on the back that are 3.0 compliant. There are no pin-outs for...
LOL... I'm running the HAF 932 as well, with the P6X58D, and i7 920... Small world eh?
Also, I'm seeing about the same identical overclocks as you. I was able to pull 4.0ghz even running about 1.287v but my temps were sitting too close to 80c. I'm not running liquid though, it's the Vigor...
Yup, it definitely has Turbo Mode. This is my processor:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLBEJ
In the Notes section you can see it talks about Intel Turbo Boost Technology. It doesn't give much detail, but if you want detail you can find it here...
Thanks for the input. I was wondering if I was at that point or not. To me the difference in 3.6ghz and 4.0ghz isn't great enough to drop another .1v on the core. With just the 400mhz I notice the temps about 12-15c higher and the CPU fan spinning about 400-500rpms faster.
The board I'm...
ChorniyVolk,
The chip supports both Hyperthreading and Turbo Mode. I've left Hyperthreading enabled as I'm a big fan of the technology. I disabled Turbo Mode when I first started playing with the overclocks simply to limit the amount of variables. I might enable it to do some more testing...
I was running stable at 4.0ghz but had to bump the voltage up to 1.287v. It felt strange though, it's rock solid at 3.6ghz running 1.175v. For another 400mhz I had to bump it by over .1v? The scaling seems off to me. And at that, Prime95 was pushing the temps close to 80c.
Board: Asus P6X58D...
Damn, that looks like an excellent overclock. What kind of cooling are you running?
I managed to bring my vcore down to 1.144 at 3.6ghz, which is below what "auto" was setting it at. I assumed "auto" was set by the CPU but I'm starting to think not since I was able to bring the voltage down...
Cool, thanks for the URL. That's sort of what I was looking to find but on a more spread poll. Hopefully I can ramp this one up around the same speed Xbit got theirs without going nuts on the vcore.
I'm curious, what types of overclocks are most people seeing at stock voltage on air? I'm wondering if my processor had a better bin or not. So far here's where I am.
3.6ghz
Stock voltage for my chip is 1.184v
20x multplier (turbo mode off)
Prime95 stable
I could probably squeeze 3.65...
