if you deal with an Apple Authorized repair center, they get their parts from Apple. i work for one here in PA.
if you get a used logic board, it might be cheaper, but you probably won't get much (if any) warranty.
I'd look for a busted screen donor like Dave The Nerd said.
so what's the no-headache laptop equivalent of a Hackbook?
I've yet to see ONE that doesn't have hardware and software driver issues, sleep doesn't work, sound problems, yada yada.
prove me wrong with the model and its price.

OTOH, welcome to Apple, where an expensive computer outlasts a cheaper Windows PC by a couple years.
2008 iMac going strong at home, 2010 Macbook Pro at work. Both plenty fast.
the iMac can run how many operating systems comfortably? and a 2008 PC?
Something to consider: we support a major architectural firm that buys Mac Pros, Macbook Pros, and runs Windows on them for their CAD software.
Why? because in the past, their PCs were unreliable, hardware-wise. They have had far less trouble with their Macs. Before they used PCs, they did run...
ARD is great, but Remote Management will need to be turned on on the server before you can connect.
You can issue this command in Terminal, but I'm not sure of you can do that over SSH (which also must be turned on first)
/usr/sbin/system_profiler
ssh serveruser@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where...
know what your 2nd biggest mistake was?
installing Windows on a perfectly good Macbook.

the idea that because an otherwise amazing Mac doesn't have USB 3.0, it's now somehow "obsolete" is ludicrous.
less bleeding-edge, sure. hell, bang on Apple for using last-gen GPUs in some of their Macs, or 5400 RPM platter drives - those i'll agree with.
and don't get me started on newer...

I would not recommend Linux on a PowerPC Mac; very little support and lots of frustration.

try another cable, try another port, try disconnecting other USB devices - is it plugged into a hub? you rebooted your computer, right?
new models coming, maybe? not a bad price for this iron...
