    can't startup computer

Are you positive that the hard drive is connected properly? It's possible that it's a loose SATA connector. If it is, get to a command prompt (should be an option somewhere in the windows CD...it's been a while so I can't give specific instructions), and then run chkdsk C: /R. It will take a...

Ha, true. Perhaps replace "fine" with "operating on a basic level".

    pc wont boot up

Three possible causes: 1. overheating CPU - make sure the heatsink is properly fitted and that the fan is working. 2. shorting motherboard - take it out of the case and try to boot with it on a wooden table. 3. faulty or underpowered power supply - try another known-good power supply with...

    Video card or CPU?

Yes, I still have the power saving modes on and things are stable. True, I really should let Prime95 run overnight, but I've let it run for 40 minutes without error. The temperature levels out around 58C after 4-5 minutes of Prime95. No thanks. I have two LCDs at work and they bug my...

    Video card or CPU?

I checked my heatsink (stock) and two of the clips had come loose. I reapplied some thermal grease and reinstalled the heatsink and got my idle temp down to 30C (it's never been that low). My RAM isn't the greatest, so I managed to get a stable overclock of 3.2GHz (350x9, memory at 700). 366x9...

    Video card or CPU?

Thanks for the responses. Resolution doesn't really matter as I'm still rocking a CRT (max 1600x1200, 125dpi). Let's just say I am unable to put up with TN panel limitations, and too cheap to get a nice IPS panel. :) My typical gaming resolution is 1280x960.

    Video card or CPU?

    I'm thinking of upgrading my system. Here's what I have now: C2D E6600 (first-gen Conroe) 6GB DDR2 HD3850 512MB P965-based mobo What would give me the bigger gain? 1. HD6850 2. i5 750 Obviously, I'm leaning towards #1 because #2 would mean a new mobo and RAM too, and I'm hesitant...

    [Retired] The LCD Thread

I see some good info about LCDs and the technology behind them, but I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have had an NEC Multisync FE791SB CRT monitor (16" visible) for almost 10 years and have been extremely happy with it. Lately it's taking a little longer to come on, and I must admit...

    Are Sound Cards worth it?

Dedicated sound card will almost always give better audio quality than onboard, but you'll spend $100+. The cheaper cards just aren't going to be that much better than onboard. To the OP: scratchiness...is it distortion or static? If distortion, then it is your speakers. Computer speakers...

    sound card dac question

Any card with the X-Fi will sound fine (stay away from the XtremeMusic which is a re-branded Audigy 2). Definitely upgrade your speakers/headphones first, or you won't be able to hear the difference. In regards to EMI shields...are you experiencing problems with EMI interference? If not...

    creative and windows 7

I have an X-Fi Fatality running on 7 x64 with no problems (ran on Vista x64 too after Creative sorted out their driver issues). The sound quality is noticeably better than the on-board sound thanks to its 96Khz/24-bit DAC. It also has much lower latency for recording thanks to its ASIO...

    Which Processor for a Server?

Theoretically it would be limited by the ethernet as 1Gbps is less than the 3Gbps SATA II, but in reality, yes, the hard drive would be the limiting factor. I have Windows Home Server running on my old P4 2.4GHz machine with 1GB of DDR RAM and ATA/66 hard drive. I notice no speed problems...

Budget HTPC mobo/proc choice for Blu-Ray

The E1200 is dual-core actually. At least Newegg claims it to be (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16819116064). The only difference between it and the downclocked E7200 should be bus speed (800 vs 1066) and fab size (65nm vs 45nm). Normally I'd stay away from Celerons, but for only...

Budget HTPC mobo/proc choice for Blu-Ray

I got a sizeable bonus at work and would like to put it towards assembling an HTPC for the living room. I've got most of the components picked out, but I can't seem to find any good source for what I need to play Blu-Ray discs. Right now I have chosen the cheapest of the cheap (I would like...

    Overheating issues

Your temps are fine. With the side on, less cool air can get inside, so the temp rises a bit. Adding a fan in the front would definitely help bring the temperatures down, but 90F is not a problem. When it starts getting close to 140-150, then you should start worrying.

    computer won't stay on

Gigabyte boards usually do that as they turn down memory timings to find something that works. Did you recently install new memory? Have you tried resetting the CMOS? I recently added 4GB of RAM to my system to get a total of 6GB, and I had to relax my memory timings in order for it to boot.

    Project management, issue tracking, etc

Why not write your own? You'd just need a server to store revisions of the files on and an interface to browse and check-in/check-out files. Our company uses MKS Integrity. It's a bit slow since it's written in Java, but it gets the job done. I have no idea on the costs. Microsoft has...

New Dell desktop can not connect to wireless network

Do you have any "internet security" programs running? They might be blocking communication with the router. How close to the wireless router are you? It could be that the antenna in the Dell isn't very good and you're simply too far away. Try it with the laptop a few feet from the router...

    May have fried my x1900gt...

The same thing happened with me, but I wasn't overclocking at all. These problems started way back when Supreme Commander came out. Now any application that stresses the 3D capabilities of the x1900gt cause artifacting and eventually a VPU crash. I'll try underclocking and see if that...
