Replaced my AMD mb with an Intel i7 mb running Ubuntu 64 bit linux. Didn't have to change one thing. Everything worked perfectly.

Benchmark DAC-1 USB DAC Shipping - PENDING

You've got a constitutional right to spend your money and enjoy it as much as you like. I think you could have done much better. Emotiva electronics are loved by many: http://www.emotiva.com/ Salk speakers are high-end for medium money. Much, much better than B&W or Polk. The Focals you have...

Thinking about going from sealed to ported sub to gain about 5db

Yep, those look like they should work. On the other hand, you are not a 16 year old teenager who might turn the amp all the way up, and add some bass boost. If you listen to your car system at moderate volumes and are not addicted to bass-heavy electronica music, you should be fine without...

Thinking about going from sealed to ported sub to gain about 5db

Looked closely, that that Kenwood driver has 15mm xmax - usually the limiting factor. I say go for. If you don't like the ported box for some reason, you can always drop it back in the sealed box. One tip - ported systems have no "resistance" below the port Hz, so you might want to use a high...

Ubuntu server, can't ssh to non-standard ports from external address

Wireshark is your friend. Load it up on the Windows 7 host and watch the traffic come in from the router. If that's ok, load it up on the Ubuntu VB guest and do the same thing. On Linux, you can also use "tcpdump" for a quick diag. chances are that it's incoming packets that are failing, not...

Not really Ubuntu, but you might want to take a look at MacPup, a Puppy Linux derivative with a Mac like desktop. Me, I'm going a different way - XFCE4 is my desktop.

    Grub2 trashed. How to fix?

I little too "soft and fuzzy" answer for me. Grub2 is evil, fixing it typically involves black magic. Had numerous troubles with it. Recently, my laptop Grub2 started refusing to find my Win7 partition. Reinstalled os-prober, waved some chicken bones at it - no progress - finally grabbed the...

help loading raid configuratoin from live CD

Red Squirrel is right. Happened to me a few times. If the live CD you are using does not have the raid and mdadm stuff built in, you will need to (For Debian systems) "apt-get install mdadm", then start mdadm, then finally "assemble an existing raid".

Netflix? Sorry wasn't sure where to post :)

I upgraded my NetFlix streaming box (cheap Sony media player) from 100Mb switch to a 1,000 Mb switch, and most NetFlix vids started playing in HD. As far as I know, my WAN cable modem speed or parameters did not change.

what current printer is linux compatible?

Needed a new laser, and got this HP 1102 from NewEgg. Plugged the USB into my Ubuntu 12.04 system which said "you've got a new printer" and 5 minutes later I was cranking out pages fast. No problems, no configuration, clicked on "ok" 2 or 3 times.

Looking for suggestions/opinions on mid/high HT sound systems.

Couple of friends of mine have Emotiva gear. No one ever talks about upgrading except to maybe a newer Emotiva model. For subs, check out http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-742 - the Dayton RS12 sub kits should take care of you. Best advise is 2 or more subs to even...

How to open multiple files into the same Kate session?

Glad you got it sorted out - I've used Kate for several years as my primary programming editor. I love the session feature - it would open the current 10-15 files that I was working with during the last programming session. Needed to setup up a script to launch it though, to null bucket all the...

How to disable mdadm from auto mounting

mdadm should not be "interested" in a partition unless it is marked as a raid type. mdadm and a bunch of other stuff is called early on in the boot sequence as part of the "initrd". I KNOW that mdadm.conf is part of that, so you may need to create that file and tag the partitions so that the...

Ubuntu Upgrade Question 11.04 to 11.10

That might be an option if I didn't have SO many programs installed - from development utilities to sound editors and analysis to some others, it takes me a couple of days to get back to "normal" if I do a clean install instead of an upgrade. I thought I saw a post a few years ago about saving...

    good little speakers

Thanks, also found out that these are available at Best Buy. The tower versions of these are an amazing bargain at $200 for a pair if they are as good as peeps are saying. I build a lot of DIY, and I can't build quality at those prices.

    good little speakers

These little boxes (4 inch woofer, 1 inch tweeter) - 7" x 12" x 8" - have been getting rave reviews from the DIY crowd, who are usually pretty critical of cheap commercial speakers. Something like these would be perfect for surrounds, desktop, or bedroom speakers. Probably much better than...

‘Intellipark’ Makes Western Digital Green Drives Prone to Early Failure Linux/RAID

Useful post - I built my current rig about 18 months ago, and got WD 1.5TB drives specifically for low noise, low power, then found out about the head parking "feature", and the "no linux support" policy. smartctl showed 4 park/unparks every 60 seconds, with constant click/click every time it...

I've been on Ubuntu for about 5 years now - starting with "regular" Gnome, then Kubuntu, then Xubuntu. Now with Unity <cough> and Gnome 3 changes, I'm going to Mint 12, since it looks like it has a maintainalbe strategy for a good Desktop interface.

Dayton Audio DTA-100a Class-T Digital Amplifier 50 WPC

@Rifterut Not going to get into a flame war here - but my and many folks experience with Parts Express is that they have excellent customer service. That said, I've heard of a few problems with Class D and Class T amps. I think the Chinese supply chains are going through a rapid evolution of...

Do Class D amplifiers sound a lot better than Class AB Amps?

I don't have golden ears - for years I've thought that there was no real difference in amplifiers beyond "high current" designs like HK or NAD. I hang out with a bunch of high-end audio guys into DIY speakers, and suddenly many of them are going to Class D amps because they sound a lot better...

    Positive pressure airflow working!

Thanks IdontCare for the great technical explanation of air flow. As far as postive pressure cases go, I modded an old Antec tower into a positive pressure case, using several Scythe Sflex input fans sucking air in through a micron furnace filter, and no output fans. Left the case closed for a...

Is there a way to give another user access to restart a certain service?

sudoers edit will do what you want. I recently setup a new Ubuntu 11.04 system for my wife, and I found that her user could not automatically mount a remote (music) share. I put the "smbmount" command with her user id in the sudoers file, and it works great.

Your method is sound, but has some shortcomings. Ubuntu upgrade hosed me again

As best that I can determine, Grub2 (actually 1.99) is the problem. Grub 1.98 (used for 10.10) works fine for me. Since I've read that 1.99 and 198 are incompatible, I've been unwilling to take the chance of borking the Natty partition by installing Grub 1.98 on the MBR. I've got a workaround...

    Ubuntu upgrade hosed me again

After extensive troubleshooting, the problem appears to be an issue between Grub 1.99 rc1 and Intel i915 video used in my laptop. I used Parted Magic live CD to repartition my disk and create a partition for 10.10, but I still can't boot that directly, since the base problem is Grub which is...

    Ubuntu upgrade hosed me again

When will I ever learn? Many, many times I've had problems with Ubuntu upgrades, and I always figure that it's temporary, and they have really solved it this time. I have a HP i5 laptop that was running 10.04, so I figured it was time to upgrade. Bumped it to 10.10 - wouldn't run X, somehow...

    Picking a Mini-ITX case

I just built a system for my SO with an i3 Sandy Bridge, Gigabyte H67 mITX, and the SG05 (with the 300W PS). No complaints about the quality, tight room inside, but easy enough build, considering it was my first mini system. I found the stock Intel cpu chiller to be effective and really not...

Best case for a dusty area?

+1 I modded an Antec case last year with a middle rating Filtrete filter - ran the rig in my sig for over a year. the outside of the filter was nasty dirty, but the temps were not rising, so no worries. Finally opened it up and it had ZERO dust inside. Proof to me concerning positive pressure...
