2013 ultrabooks, infestation of the 16:9 menace

I had always been a big fan of stylus based tablet PC. My current laptop is a Lenovo X220T I bought 2 years ago. Lenovo notebooks are probably the best in terms of inputs; they have proper Synaptics touchpads and the proprietary TrackPoint joystick-like controller inherited from IBM has an...

2013 ultrabooks, infestation of the 16:9 menace

First of all, my apologies, I am just here to rant and vent my frustration with the death of the 16:10 ratio :) All 2013 ultrabooks by Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung so far, all of them, have 16:9 resolutions. None of them have any unique selling points (USP) whatsoever...

PC turning off and on and off and on

You should try to reseat everything if possible. Even a dislodged graphics card can cause this symptom. Also, before Windows load, keep pressing F8, and go to "Disable Automatic Restart when error" something like that (if it says Enable... it's already disabled). If you have it on, bluescreen...

new router better than the WRT54GL?

I am using Asus RT-N16 router for about a year with Tomato custom firmware. It's the first time I used custom firmware and to be honest I am very impressed with the stability and features such as QoS.

[Updated] Need help checking set theory mathematical notations

Thank you very much for the reply, very much appreciated iCyborg Oh thanks, basically cardinality has to be an odd if r is in Q At least one r indeed must be in every S, this is one of the criterion for forming S. S is basically one or more Qs joint (union-add) together. Put it another way, Q...

    4GB vs 8GB

With RAM so xxx cheap it's a sin not to get 8GB over 4GB. It will be noticeable if you run memory hungry 64-bit apps like photoshop. I am running 16GB with fancycache. I know fancycache is a beta software But I've run it for a year and it's really good for HDD caching if you have spare RAM...

[Updated] Need help checking set theory mathematical notations

Thanks, I found out multiset and classes (collection of sets) I was able to write the following: I just need some Mathematics guru to check over the syntax. q and r are defined constants. R^q is the cartesian product of R q times. I mostly followed the ISO-80000-2 notation convention. I used...

[Updated] Need help checking set theory mathematical notations

I am a beginner in set theory and more importantly the notation conventions. I am trying to describe what I am doing below in mathematical notation: Given a set A, containing elements which come in non-distinct pairs e.g. {a,a,b,b,c,c,c,c,d,d,.....} I am to partition A such that P1...Pn...

Windows 7, hard drives power cycle repeatedly after resuming from sleep

Hi. I am running RAID 1 with two Hitachi 2TB HDDs on Intel Z68 chipset, running latest chipset and rapid storage drivers. I don't know when the problem begun, but after resuming from sleep, the two Hitachi HDDs (and only them) would power cycle repeatedly upon disk access. I can hear clicking...

    Any comments on the G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 RAM?

I've been using 16GB of these at 1T command rate and slightly lowered CAS at 8. I have not had success overclocking, but I think that's due to my CPU, not the RAM.

Difference between G.Skill Ripjaws and Ripjaws X RAM?

Apart from any difference in timing and frequency, Ripjaws X is designed for 2nd generation (Sandybridge) chipsets and usually run at 1.5V or even 1.35V low voltages, wheras Ripjaws are older RAMs which usually run at 1.6V or above.

Install OS on SSD and Smart Response question

Is there a way to figure out what's preventing my PC from going to sleep?

Sometimes it's not due to software. I know (on some combinations of monitor and GPU) HDMI and Display Port displays have this glitch with handshaking. If the conenction is dropped the display refreshes, and this lead to problems such as PC waking itself back up. E.g. if I sleep using display...

I give up being a CPU enthusiast.

First, you misinterpreted my sentence. I am replying to the initial topic, that CPU race in current form, more cores, SoC, are 'boring'. You don't need graphnene to do this as they are silicon tech. To answer your 2nd question, power ceiling and TDPs. The performance inprovement of recent CPUs...

I give up being a CPU enthusiast.

CPU space won't get interesting until they ditch silicon and move to graphene transistors. At best they can do is pack more and more cores, move to fusion, and 3D stacking.
  19. M

    Is this possible?

That depends on what stuff you move For example, you can't move critical operating system files. You can't usually just move an installed program by cut and paste and expect it to function normally.

Any comments on Corsair Vengeance Blue 16GB 4X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 RAM?

Not necessarily, depend on what you do, extra RAM capacity is not necessarily a bad thing. i5 is pretty fast already even at stock. You don't really need to overclock the RAM, the RAM overclocking is completely decoupled with CPU overclocking, and really you don't really need to overclock RAM...

6950->6970 Flash Success Rates - With Poll

I believe it is safer to flash using a modified 6950 BIOS to unlock shader, rather than using a 6970 BIOS, and overclock core manually leaving out the memory. The 6950 uses lower bin memory and may not handle the extra frequency or voltage stress a 6970 BIOS may apply.

New hard drive making constant sound like it's working extra hard

Go to Task Manager > Resource Monitor > Hard disk, and sort the view by highest read I/O and write I/O. Check for any suspicious activity, e.g. viruses, etc. Or use the more advanced tool such as process monitor from sysinternals and within it use filter for the drive path, e.g. D:\* to monitor...

Any comments on Corsair Vengeance Blue 16GB 4X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 RAM?

Bear in mind, with 4 channels of RAM populated, no matter how good the RAM is, the overclockerability for the CPU does suffer. For example, I could hit 4.5Ghz before but now with 16GB RAM I can only hit 4.2Ghz.

    Symptoms of SSD failure?

I don't recommend stress testing (or benchmarking too much) on a SSD I don't know how Iometer works. If it writes too much within the hour, it marks a lot of flash as dirty and will degrade the performance, until SSD is idle for some time to recover.

Does this sound like a hard drive issue?

That's the easiest to do. I'd also click install and let Windows XP copied the files on the desired partition until first restart before you put the image on. Unless you have easy access to diskpart. The reason why is as below: diskpart can set a partition as active. It may be on UBCD I am not...

Does this sound like a hard drive issue?

It's probably too late to say this, if you unplug your old drive and you could get into Windows setup (it will still work without a HDD), then there is something wrong with the storage system and you ruled out the CPU, RAM, PSU Anyway, to answer your question, it depends a lot of Drive Image...

    NVIDIA raid5 problem

RAID 5 was invented in a era when HDD are so much more expensive, with so low HDD prices (before the flood) it is hard to justify. When I considered RAID 5 myself I worked it out it's almost just as economical to get 4 HDDs RAID 1+0 (software raid) instead of 3 HDDs plus a controller, which...

    NVIDIA raid5 problem

+1 I wanted to do RAID 5 and I realise that to do RAID 5 properly one needs a proper hardware controller card and it's just not worth the effort. In terms of data security RAID 10 > Raid 1>= Raid 6 > Raid 5. I went to do RAID 1 instead.

    Crucial M4 120GB SSD or Intel 320 120GB SSD?

Marvel controller is very good. Crucial has ironed out all problems know and both the m4 drive and C300 are spectacular. Although you can't beat Intel in reliability I don't think, Crucial is good contender. Performance wise, If you can find an old C300, I'd recommend that over the m4 (much...

    How reliable are SSDs?

Nearly all failure reported are due to controller, firmware bugs and drivers, not with the flash. As with any new technology there are issues to iron out. All storage media can lose data and it's no excuse not to back up data, whether it's HDD or SSD. NAND flash is limited by program/erase...

Crucial M4, 256GB...any good deals out there?

That's because the contoller is limited by a number of channels (hence also number of NAND die) so that parrallelism no longer increase performance. You lose trim doing RAID though and if you have a 4 disk RAID0, your data security isn't very good.
