    Push-button-to-start ignition...like it?

I have a 14 Focus ST with push button start and absolutely love it. I will never have another car without it. My keys never have to come out of pocket.

    Status of TRIM on Linux?

Whoops, somehow the rest of the post was cut off. I ran several tests before and after the change. Consistently, reads were substantially higher. run 1 Timing buffered disk reads: 1478 MB in 3.00 seconds = 492.20 MB/sec run 2 Timing buffered disk reads: 1492 MB in 3.00 seconds = 497.04...

    Status of TRIM on Linux?

There is a fair amount of info on the net that claims adding discard to fstab noticeably affect performance. If you're using systemd: sudo systemctl enable fstrim.timer && sudo systemctl start fstrim.timer I tested disk performance before and after: sudo hdparm -t /dev/sdx

    SR-72

Interesting, the last time I read up on the subject, it wasn't confirmed. I just sifted through some documents released under FOI and it confirms that his U-2 was brought down by the concussion of one of the 14 SA-2s (NATO codename for the V-75) fired at Powers. Very interesting stuff...

    SR-72

I agree. However, the U-2 maintained high altitudes through efficiency on the ragged edge of its operating envelope. Relative to interceptors and SAMs, the U-2 was barely moving. It is still not known what brought down Gary Powers' U-2 but he did recall seeing another parachute on the way...

    SR-72

Guidance was the largest weakspot. Defence analysts were worried when the Soviet Defence Net was first equipped with SA-5 as it was capable of reaching altitudes of 110,000 ft+. The problem was guidance. As you said, a course change and increase in speed virtually assured evasion. When the...

    SR-72

That is very true but in the context of today's missile technology, I wonder how it would fare.

    SR-72

Indeed. I'd question the aircraft's survivability considering today's radar and missile technology.
  9. H54

    SR-72

The problem with missiles since the beginning is that once fired, thats it. ICBMs were forecast to be the future and that large strategic bomber forces of SAC and the Soviet Union were obsolete. It is true that an ICBM can be fired and hit a target anywhere in the world within an hour with...

    SR-72

A bit of an exaggeration. They never took off empty and even for an SR-71, it would be impossible to rendezvous with a tanker within 4 minutes. Fully fuelled, the aircraft would leak without a high enough total air temperature to heat the sections of the fuselage. They had plenty of time and...

    SR-72

The satellites and other methods were not anywhere near as good as getting intel as the SR-71. Re-positioning assets in orbit takes a long time and is very expensive. It is also known when most of these satellites are overhead. The SR-71, on the other hand, could get intel into the hands of...

    System76 laptops

I'm also strongly considering the Lemur for the same reasons. ~14" screen, made for Linux computer, not UEFI crap to deal with, great built quality, etc. You should also check out Zareason. I almost bought the ultralap 430 but found out that the battery is not removable in the sense that a...

787 electrical fires, they keep cropping up.

Its not as simple as that. When an aircraft is certified by the FAA, it is certified in a certain configuration. This process can take years. Any deviation from that configuration (introducting a subtype or making a change to the original design) means re-certification. I'm guessing that...

That is true but he does not have intimate knowledge of what is going on at Boeing. I think its irresponsible of him to make such comments without context.

I think its fair to say that more context and required before he can make a comment like that.

787 electrical fires, they keep cropping up.

Exactly. There are several drains (gang drains mainly) that are used for venting various fluids. In fact, there are a few aircraft that leak so much that the joke in the industry is that its bad when the engine isn't leaking because you know its out of oil!

787 electrical fires, they keep cropping up.

Keep in mind that the RAT is only an emergency system. I also, I find it incredibly difficult to believe that the APU on the 747 cannot be started in flight as it would partially defeat the purpose of having one. Sure, most APUs have on the ground and inflight limitations for starting and...

    Coming back to linux desktop

I would recommend either Fedora if you don't mind all of the extra stuff that comes pre-packaged or Arch if you don't mind a little bit of configuration. I run Arch with Gnome Shell and really like it. Not having the touch the mouse very often does wonders for workflow. The packages in the...

Ubuntu 12.10 to include adverts by default, also no more live disk.

I agree with this. So long as the user has the choice to remove it if they don't want it. Ubuntu has changed dramatically over the past two years and like you, its no longer a distro I would consider. Increasing the image size is the smartest thing they've done in a while. In the age of...

Very compelling evidence not to mention scientific. While St. Louis nearly tops the list every single year, you have to admit that all major cities throughout the world have their terrible spots. You claim you spent a couple of weeks in St. Louis, did you actually explore the city or did you...

    The Desktop Environment Debate

I run Arch with Gnome Shell. I love it as it as I can work very, very fast with the shell and not have to use the mouse/touchpad that much. Not a fan of KDE, LXDE/XFCE are ok, and Unity is just god awful.

Anyone else not impressed by tablets?

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Louis C.K. is funny as hell too. However, I think a lot of people feel that if the tablet is marketed as laptop replacement (we hear all the time that we're entering the post-pc era), it should be at least as functional and capable. There are several...

Anyone else not impressed by tablets?

For something that can be more expensive than a decent laptop, less capable, less open, and hardly more portable, I am certainly not impressed. I'll be sticking with a laptop for some time to come.
