Does the CPU matter in gaming anymore?

The forums here have been full of derp for a while now. And all other forums on the internet. Trolling and derping (and nerd rage and shilling) is at an all-time high. It's an epidemic that mods and admins are not immune to either.

IPC comparison between Sandy Bridge and old CPUs?

Well, since very few replies here, I decided to do the hard work myself. After some thorough analysis and calculations, here is what I have found: At the very worst, clock for clock, thread per thread, Sandy Bridge outperforms Dothan by around 45%. At the very best, clock for clock and thread...

IPC comparison between Sandy Bridge and old CPUs?

Yeah, thanks anyways. I'm just curious percentage-wise, how much better clock for clock is Sandy Bridge versus the older Intel CPUs I mentioned? I know there are some CPU gurus in here, hopefully some of them can shed light on this?

IPC comparison between Sandy Bridge and old CPUs?

I've already seen that data before, and it's not what I'm looking for. Most of the old CPUs I mentioned are not listed there.

IPC comparison between Sandy Bridge and old CPUs?

I've been looking deep into the technical info and benchmarks, but have had trouble figuring this out: How does the IPC of Sandy Bridge compare, clock for clock, core for core, to some much older Intel CPUs such as Dothan, or Coppermine or Conroe? I'm curious just how much of an IPC...

Bulldozer, the state of the CPU industry, and Intel going forward

With Bulldozer being a big disappointment, people here and on other forums are having knee-jerk reactions and proclaiming this is the "dark ages" for the CPU industry, and so on and so forth. That couldn't be further from the truth. The fact is, Intel is no longer even competing with AMD. AMD...

AMD's Cayman - HD 6900 series info delayed till week of Dec 13th

So you're an ATI fanboy, but also an Intel fanboy? Very interesting, seeing as ATI is now a part of AMD. By the way, I wasn't referring specifically to you with that post.

Will Bobcat be the home run AMD is looking for?

The idle power consumption is great. At load though, Zacate's consumption is nothing special. Keep in mind future Atoms will continue to go down in both idle and load consumption. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Atom D525 offers the same power consumption as the 510 while...

Will Bobcat be the home run AMD is looking for?

Given the hype for Bobcat, and also considering Bobcat is out-of-order while Atom is in-order, personally I don't find the performance all that amazing. Compared to a 1.8Ghz Atom D525, the gap would have been even smaller. In the single-thread Cinebench test, Zacate E-350 beats an Atom...

AMD's Cayman - HD 6900 series info delayed till week of Dec 13th

So where are all of you AMD supporters that claimed the 69xx cards would definitely not be delayed? Time for you to eat some crow and admit you were wrong.

Will Bobcat be the home run AMD is looking for?

Anand's initial Brazos (Zacate) benchmarks are in, and yes, it is VERY clear now. Even a low-end Celeron E absolutely smokes Zacate in terms of CPU performance. A mobile CULV Sandy Bridge will easily smoke a Bobcat in terms of CPU performance. Where are you getting these imaginary numbers...

AMD demos Bulldozer at Investors conference

To everyone saying that we know "very little" with regard's to Bulldozer's cache setup, I have a question to ask you (one which I already know the answer to, but will ask anyways). When Bulldozer comes out, and if it happens to be the case that Bulldozer's cache setup (and practical function...

Will Bobcat be the home run AMD is looking for?

That does not make it a "home run". Reality will show us whether in fact it is a home run or not. Objective measures of that would be the market share Bobcat achieves, acceptance of Bobcat systems among "Joe public", revenue, number of OEMs that use Bobcat in their systems, and other similar...

Which will be here first, SB or Llano?

To clarify, I meant power-efficient, not performance efficient. In terms of power efficiency, HT is a good way to utilize more of the CPU's resources.

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

This is a valid point Zebo. Rumors are AMD's 6900 cards are being delayed by none other than TSMC yield issues. If this is true, it's very ironic. The 69xx cards might not be available in time for the holiday season, which would give Nvidia a really nice boost. Exactly. AMD's bet with...

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

AMD will also face much more intense GPU competition from Intel, starting early next year with Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs with integrated GPUs.
  17. D

Which will be here first, SB or Llano?

Uh, no. HT is an efficient way for a core to handle two threads. A 4 core Llano will be more power-hungry than a dual-core SB with HT. This is especially important in the laptop segment. That is not even mentioning Intel's superior fab process. On the desktop side, most SBs will be quad core...

Nvidia shows some details on Cooling chamber on Upcoming Card Plus Video of Black Ops

With regards to credibility, I believe I already answered that in my post. There isn't a whole lot I can do on an online forum to be "credible". I definitely believe this. I wouldn't ask anyways, as I already have a good idea of who is or isn't.

Nvidia shows some details on Cooling chamber on Upcoming Card Plus Video of Black Ops

What sort of "proof" could I possibly post on an online forum? Be logical for a minute. Links that show how AMD engages in this sort of marketing step-by-step? A link to a blog that claims to have "proof" of this? A comprehensive post-by-post analysis on the posting behavior of certain users...

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

With regards to field of vision and multiple monitors, it depends how they are arranged, what size the monitors are, and what aspect ratio the monitors have. You're frankly making a lot of assumptions if you feel that 3 is the best for peripheral vision. Anyways, I won't go further off-topic...

Nvidia shows some details on Cooling chamber on Upcoming Card Plus Video of Black Ops

So you're certain Nvidia engages in guerilla online marketing yet AMD does not? How are you certain of this? I am certain that AMD DOES engage in this silly form of forum/online marketing, and even more so than Nvidia. Joe public knows Nvidia more than they know AMD/ATI. AMD has more to gain...

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

I never said that Nvidia would "settle" or never offer it. I wouldn't be surprised if Kepler and/or Maxwell offer 3+ monitor support on a single card. My original point was in reply to Gloomy's post about how he found it "odd" that Nvidia did not have support for this yet. AMD cards support...

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

So using this logic, why don't either AMD OR Nvidia have a single card product that can power 6+ monitors? What excuses do Nvidia and AMD have here? I mean what makes 3 monitors better than 2? Why not have 6 or more monitors? Where do you draw the line? Where does it end, if ever? How about...

Crysis 2 being redesigned for GTX580?

I am genuinely curious, is it your mission on these forums to make everything Nvidia-related a personal argument? I find it amazing that you are allowed to continue to post here. You can think whatever you want of me, and you can proclaim yourself "l33t" master of these forums for all I care...

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

Again, like I said, Nvidia has its own "unique" feature in terms of superior 3D support. Nvidia cards can do 3 or more monitors, you just need more than 1 card to do it. We can also talk about PhysX as a unique feature. I find it a bit odd that you're mentioning *only* 3 monitor support and...

Thanks for the clarification. So do we know exactly what Cedar Trail's successor will be, and Oak Trail's successor?

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

Why buy a gaming card then if you're not gaming? If you're talking about professional/work applications on multiple monitors, then a Quadro or FirePro card would be a better option.
  31. D

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

Exactly. Simultaneously gaming on 3 or more monitors using a single card is pretty pointless. If you have that many monitors, it only makes sense to have 2 or more cards in an SLI or Crossfire setup. With 2 or more Nvidia cards in SLI, Eyefinity's advantage disappears.
  32. D

Will Bobcat be the home run AMD is looking for?

You could be right. Then again, Intel could surprise us and have Ivy Bridge cover even some of the lower end of the market. The rumor is that even low-end Intel products will be quad-core with Ivy Bridge. This is not counting the extremely mobile segment of Atom though. All the mobile Ivy Bridge...

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

Nvidia has a superior 3D setup though with their cards, and their cards scale better in SLI. I could care less about Eyefinity or 3D personally, but whatever suits people's preferences.

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

Funny and sadly, predictable. The worst part is that not all of these comments came from paid AMD PR people. Some of these comments came from regular people who actually believe what they posted. The 580 is completely expected personally. It's not a surprise to me Nvidia now has a very strong...

    GTX580 reviews thread

The 580 can already run Crysis at max settings in *most* resolutions. The question you are asking depends on the resolution of the game. With better drivers, Crysis could be fairly playable at 2500x1600 max settings on the 580.

Nvidia shows some details on Cooling chamber on Upcoming Card Plus Video of Black Ops

Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card Gets Pictured (Rumours)

As expected, the GTX 580 excels in DirectX 11 games that have heavier tessellation use. Definitely great performance from the card, amazing that it can beat the dual-GPU 5970 in several benchmarks despite being a single GPU card. After official reviews come out, I expect a flood of comments...

Crysis 2 being redesigned for GTX580?

I have no clue how what works? Exactly what are you referring to, tessellation? That's an awfully ambitious assumption you have there. If you're referring to the GTX 580, YOU don't know how it "works" either. From your posts, it does sound like you don't quite understand what the purpose of...
