    new build; doesn't always restart

this is the i5 2400 on an ASUS p8 p67 pro motherboard ... revision b3. Windows 7 home installed great, until the update was performed. Now the computer will not do a cold boot. Upon a restart with this CD in the drive of course it brings up the menu option to boot from the cd disk if I ignore...

    ASUS' "Q-Connector"

it always amazes me when something stops me like this in doing a computer, as I have been building them since 1994. Occasionally though, I do still get bad parts like anybody else!

    ASUS' "Q-Connector"

thank you that is what I thought. That being the case, there is no reason why the setup should not work. I just pulled the board back out of the case, applied ATX power and the 24 pin connector, but still no juice. If this board is bad, it will be the first one I have had to RMA in years...

    ASUS' "Q-Connector"

I typically build at least six desktop computers per year all using Asus boards. The one I'm putting together right now did not have the q- connector in the box to connect the front panel to the motherboard. Fortunately, I think, I had a q- connector in my closet and am trying to use it... but...

I am temporarily disabled, and speaking into this computer with a microphone. Windows 7 is a great OS but for some reason mic boost will not stay on and must be reset every time I use speech recognition. in the sounds panel when I set the boost to where I need it, Windows does not light up the...

Drivers loaded fine but no network access

Yea, just like I thought; they wree already there. Installing that dowload just uninstalled the existing ones then restarted & reinstalled them. Any other suggestions? I know the network cable is live. But both ports show disconnected. I have shut off the firewall, and also made sure they...

    Upgrade 8800GT to GTX 460?

I just did that exact same swap...but that my 8800 was factory overclocked. Used it in my OC Quad 6600 until I built this i7 computer, then I put the card in this computer. It ran great. Last month or so, I replaced the 8800 with an EVGA GTX 460. I really didn't see what I was expecting...

Screen refreshes slower with new card

One more thing, FYI the rez that I'm working on is only 1280x1024 on a pair of 19" flat panels. Nothing like the high resolutions that some of you guys are using.

Screen refreshes slower with new card

Yea but why didn't this problem exist when I first built the machine, using my old GT8800 card? It only started after I 'upgraded' my video to the new lineup.

Screen refreshes slower with new card

When I built this i7 computer last year (in my sig below), I originally used my GTX8800 Overclocked PCIe card. The computer ran great for a long time. But a couple months back, I decided to use that video card in another computer on the LAN. I figured it would give me a great chance to...

    Dell XPS restarts/boots at will

Thanks but no, this one's not gonna be that simple! I blew clean all the case fans and radiator that Dell uses on these XPS units as well as the power supply & the video. Everything's cool and there is a lot of air flowing. Memtest 86 ran for hours and hours, and after a dozen passes it did...

    Dell XPS restarts/boots at will

TexasHiker, I'd love to do so but the boots are so random that I'd not know if I fixed it for a good day or so. It is a good suggestion though and I'll resort to that if I can't find anything else software related.

    Dell XPS restarts/boots at will

I'm working on a Dell XPS 7100 with an Intel Core2Duo and 2G of RAM. It runs fine and reports no spyware/virus issues. But it will randomly reboot. It's three yrs old and has XP Media Center Edition on it. Hard drive is less than half full. When it restarts there are no blue screens and...

Multiple display set up - how does GPU perform compared to a single screen?

I run two monitors here and don't have that issue on my build (see sig). These are 19" Samsung Flat Panel monitors. But I'm only running 1280x1124 in each screen so my setup has a whole lot less pixels than yours.

    new hard drive

I looked for the TB Western Digitals when I did my own build here and couldn't find them at the time I needed 'em. I got the Samsung F series 1TB drive instead and this computer rocks! Even now, over a year later it's the best computer I've ever put together.

    New computer big problem

I was hesitant to try the only other PSU that I had in the shop 'cause it's a 300W. But it did start the computer. I took the Thermaltake PSU out & then tried to get it all to work outside the case. Got frustrated with cabling (you know the thick Thermaltake cables are hard to move around)...

    New computer big problem

I've got a newly-completed i5 based machine with an MSI board, powered by a Thermaltake PSU. All parts new last night. It ran overnight and all morning today. No overclock, all is at factory settings. Just now I shut it down to recheck Bios settings but I did not change anything. On...

Regretting use of an MSI motherboard

I am 99 percent an Asus guy. On the build I just completed today, I used an i5 and an MSI motherboard. The computer basically came out OK ... but for a couple of anomolies I need to figure out before I put it into service full time. First, Memtest+ won't check the memory. When the PC boots...

    Memtest won't work

Everything on that computer actually IS all at default. It all came up with the correct settings, from what I can tell and it seems to run fine. The MemTest screen does ID the correct amount of ram and the i5 processor type. But other than identifying the system, it does nothing.

    Memtest won't work

I've got a new build on the bench and so far, it's running fine. I wanted to run Memtest on the RAM for a day, before putting the computer into service - but the program won't run! I've tried it over & over again. The bios is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive and it does indeed, show the...

Performance sweet spot VS Price on i5

One of the machines here is an i3 on an Intel board that I tossed together in a pinch last year. It's no faster I don't think, than the old Dell Pentium 4 machine that I am going to replace this week with the i5. I am not after the latest & greatest on this build, just snappy performance. And...

Performance sweet spot VS Price on i5

Thanks for the feedback. Correct, this will be a stock-configuration build, no overclocking. I'm strictly an Intel guy so it would be one of the i5's in the build.
  38. S

Performance sweet spot VS Price on i5

I need to do another build this wk. It does not need to be anywhere near as powerful as the i7 OC machine that I currently use for myself (see my sig below). For this user it will be strictly email apps and Microsoft Office programs for running a Non-Profit. Lots of still pictures in a...

Intel DH55TC/Core i3 550 - Hard drives magically disappeared (temporarily)

I know I may get flak for this but I have to say ... it's the same kind of stuff I experienced years ago and it caused me to quit buying SG drives. I know that for every drive I have RMA'd to Seagate/Maxtor there's a thousand others that work fine. But in my experience building hundreds -...

    [RAM] 6gb 1600 vs 8gb 1333

Have to agree. You would NEVER notice a difference between two speeds of RAM in the real world. Unless, ~perhaps~ they were extremes like PC133 VS: DDR3. But you could never experience that type of extreme anyway, since the appropriate processors for the two types of RAM are generations...
