    Upgrade time, been 5 years.

Video editing and compression, 3d rendering and audio processing all take good advantage of hyper-threading. Games and general software do just fine with a straight quad-core, esp if the savings in going from the i7 to the i5 helps you purchase an SSD. I would not consider a new build without an...

    Upgrade time, been 5 years.

The silent and overlooked heart of any system. Also, you need a new power supply to take advantage of Haswell's new sleep states.

    Upgrade time, been 5 years.

Do you think you'd keep this new computer for 5 years? I don't see a hard drive listed. If you have not experienced an SSD, I'd def consider something like a 256GB Samsung 840Pro or Evo. There is some debate going on right now about AMD's Mantle and its effect on the future of game cards and...

    Dead SSD = Data Lost?

I have had luck popping a futzed SSD into an external USB caddy. Often when they "break" you can still read off of them. Live and learn on the backup thing. Many of us have.

    Need a £100 850w PSU

I like my RM850. It's very quiet and seems to handle my 4930k and two GTX760 video cards well.

Is it the end now for Xp

I feel that OSes "generally" get better. Win2000 -> WinXP -> Vista -> Win7 -> Win8 XP def got long in the tooth. Vista was the only one I truly did not like. I've never gotten the outrage towards Win8.

Monitor randomly shuts off - advice on a new?

Good to hear. I just picked up an HP ZR2470w. It's newer, so I don't know if it will suffer this same fate (random shut down) but I (now) read that is something this model does after a while. I'm keeping my paperwork in order in case I need to use the 3-year warranty. My Apple Cinema 27"...

    Help me build good PC

Looks like the "home" version. Only real difference for most users is: 1. Can't join a domain, like in many businesses. 2. Does not have Remote Desktop feature. You can get around this with VNC if need be. 3. Does not have the Bitlocker feature. For most people those are non-issues. That...

Need some selecting between two 4TB external solutions for critical data

LaCie and critical don't really go together in my world. Red has a mixed reputation from what I can tell and most of the Red advantage is software based. FWIW I use a 4GB Western Digital Black as my important drive. 5 year warranty is telling. My older 1GB Black has given me zero issues and is...

What is best way to upgrade my SSD drive and not blow up steam?

Just re-download the games from steam? During the steam install, I made a folder called "_steam" on my platter drive and installed the games there. Load times are not great, but, yeah, I did not want them on my SSD for space reasons.

    Help me build good PC

Not sure if this applies internationally, but there are two Windows you can buy. OEM/System builder or full-retail. You want the OEM/System Builder one if that is an option. Same Windows, just cheaper.

Tough call: new Mac mini or wait til Mac Pro?

These are not even close to the same computers. As always it depends what you plan to do with the computer. FWIW, When I was waiting for Adobe and Apple to get their poo together during the switch to Intel, I sold my dual G5 and picked up a 1.42GHz G4 Mac Mini to use for light Photoshop and web...

    Best Sub $600 1440p 27" Display?

ZR2740w at B&H Photo $499 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...D_Backlit.html I have one and like it fine. It lacks OSD and USB3 type features, but after it took calibration from my Spyder Pro 4 and I think it looks great. No issues with dead pixels or bleed, image seems even. I read it...

ASRock X79 Extreme9 or ASUS R.O.G. Rampage IV Extreme ?

I'm not much of an overclocker either. I did let the motherboard overclock with some "performance?" setting in the BIOS and it ran at 4.2GHz with no issues for a day, but I reverted back to stock since it's really my workstation computer. I assume I could have reached 4.5GHz if I tried. I just...

2GB VRAM not enough for BF4?

I'm able to play BF4 enjoyably with high or ultra settings and no or 2x AA on 1440p using two GTX760 2GB cards in SLI. Using GPU-Z: It looks like I stay in the 1960MB to 1980MB out of 2048 used. My memory controller load stays in the 30% range for the most part occasionally reaching 40-42%...

    670 SLI Upgrade? (BF4)

I have two 2GB GTX760 in SLI and am running BF4 with mostly ultra settings on 1440p with no real issues that I can tell. The 670 and 760 are pretty close in performance if I am not mistaken.

    GTX 760 Dilemma

My GTX760 SLI seems to do a good job with BF4 on 1440p. On the other hand, you could probably get ok money for the GTX760 if sold used now. That is one benefit of it not getting a price cut.

Looking to buy a new Intel CPU...should I wait for Haswell EE?

I just bought a 4930k. I do video and 3d stuff and the 3770k I replaced joined the render farm. Unless you are hitting a wall, Haswell-E will offer DDR4 and a new chipset. X79 is pretty long in the tooth. FWIW, BF4 is working my 4930k harder than I thought it would, so, maybe games will start...

    Need a video card recommendation.

I had trouble with an AMD HD6950 2GB. Card had never given me a lick of trouble before this incident. It's an "approved" card, but crashed like crazy in Premiere Pro CC unless I turned Mercury Playback Hardware Acceleration off which made PP CC run slow and dogged the CPU out. I switched to an...

    What's the difference ??

Gt610 uses a 64-bit memory path and the 5570 uses a 128-bit. The 5570 can probably move data faster. And as Stuka87 says, it's a system - GPU, memory type, memory bandwith, etc. There is no one thing you can look at.

Accidental SLI - 2 cards / 3 monitors - how to manage this?

Yeah, the two 760s in SLI are just fine driving the 1440p. === Here's how it works for me: No disconnecting, leaving monitors turned off or rebooting. The control panel can handle everything. In the Nvidia control panel use: "Configure SLI" to enable and disable SLI. and "Set-up multiple...

    Windows 8. I Knew it

No issues here. Been on Win8 since launch and 8.1 since launch. I like Apple, but after Apple released MacPro pricing, I built a new 4930k rig on Win 8.1 to handle Adobe CC (including After Effects and Premiere Pro) and Cinema 4d work. For less than the price of a Mac Pro quad, I got a hexa...

Accidental SLI - 2 cards / 3 monitors - how to manage this?

I built a new rig I did not completely think this through from the gaming side. My main use for this computer is video editing and 3d. I already had two 1920x1080 TN monitors running off a single MSI GTX760 2GB. With the new rig, I added another MSI GTX760 2GB and a third monitor, a 27 inch...

Get the Win 8 for 14.99 if you didnt really buy a new pc

I can't really approve of this. The legit upgrade was only $40. The company spent 3 years working on it, and yet, you had to just squeeze a little more out of the deal didn't you? I want to be highly paid and get every thing for free.

I seem to be having trouble getting the Windows 8 Mail app working with my Gmail account that uses 2 factor. I enter my email and password, but it's not getting to the point where it want me to enter my application-specific password? It just fails saying the email address or password...

    NAS, WHS, or Linux?

I have shared drives and USB 2 drives all over the place. I also have Windows 7 and OS X computers. I want to start using server. I see pre-built NAS boxes, but they seem expensive and get mediocre rating almost universally. Also, their price/storage ratio does not seem that great. I kinda...

    NAS Storage?

I am interested in this as well. Most of the NAS I see already have drives in them? And often the capacity is a little less than optimal for the money. Advice on a budget upgrade?

Game sucked, but I did see Bobby Cox's last game ever as manager. This is based on my Gigabyte Mobo, but it should be close to yours. To overclock your system: When you are booting, hit the DEL key to enter BIOS. In the first BIOS section the M.I.T. Intelligent Tweaker or something like...

    Graphic Work and entertainment PC

Actually, they do use the GPU pretty heavy for things like manipulating complex models and models with textures when you are working in the program. In my experience, mid-range cards are fine for 3d modeling though, UNLESS you know you are going to be working with very heavy scenes. I do kind...

replace E6750 HD4850 with i3-540 for an HTPC

I think Windows Update had junked my ATi drivers. I uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled all drivers. Now when I check "Enable Hardware Acceleration (ATi Avivo)" in PowerDVD my CPU usage drops from 30% to 1% playing Blu-Ray as an .mkv file. Not bad. Picture looks great- motion, pans and...
