    So, where's the Intel monopoly?

Honestly wasn't trying to be cunning. I did mention IGP in my post but it was left out of the desktop filter because it didn't change the desktop filter. The appeal of IGP and a desktop system with an additional discrete graphics card (and other discrete cards) rather than a laptop is in...

    So, where's the Intel monopoly?

VT-d is PCI passthrough. Assigning PCI hardware directly to specific VM's isn't exactly useful on laptops vs desktop with several integrated devices and several expansion slots. Assigning specific hard drives to specific VM's or using RAID isn't exactly realistic on a laptop unless you are...

    So, where's the Intel monopoly?

Intel offers good value for the money... The monopoly exists not in what Intel is offering, but rather in what they are not offering. This has been posted a few times, but I really don't think it's understood. Intel is stripping features from CPU's even if it doesn't really make sense...

    So, where's the Intel monopoly?

Bingo. Intel is artificially restricting many aspects of their chips for the sole reason that there is no competition. Another element to the K/IGP issue is VT-d. You have to upgrade to the K to get the better IGP, but none of the K models have VT-d. If you believe we're not suffering right...

    Ask AMD about BD?

A8's power usage as "mere quads" isn't entirely accurate. They are quads with integrated GPU. A four-core Llano, with GPU, is 228mm^2. Take away the GPU, PCIe connections, display connections, and UVD, and the size is reduced by slightly more than half. Add in the additional cores, some L3...

    Ask AMD about BD?

This. I was thinking something similar. There were improvements made to the Phenom II/Athlon II core with Llano. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/399?vs=122 Taking out the two Sysmark results that are "wonky" (one is extremely in favour of the old core while another is extremely in...

    In defense of "Bulldozer"

This is one of the most ridiculous replies I've ever seen. You have smoked way too much my friend. There aren't more "real" cores versus six-core parts. VT-d is available on PhII, so I have that already without having to switch to BD. There is no way you will get "2-3 more pure VM boxes" out...

    In defense of "Bulldozer"

I have to echo sentiments that defending BD is wasted effort. I am probably one of the few enthusiasts where my particular enthusiastic interest is one that BD might do well at (running virtual machines), and even I am going to take a pass on BD. I haven't really searched out reviews where they...

    Sandy Bridge-E VT-d Virtualization broken w/C1 stepping

Actually, as I recall, there was speculation that Hyper-Threading was physically present on Conroe (and subsequent Core2 processors), but was disabled because it negatively affected performance. It is completely reasonable to disable features that don't work properly.

    Sandy Bridge-E VT-d Virtualization broken w/C1 stepping

It is absolutely not reasonable for Intel to throw a huge amount of inventory in the garbage because a very tiny group of users would be affected by disabling the feature affected by the bug. Once again, VT-d is only one of the virtualization features of Intel's chips, and not all...

    Sandy Bridge-E VT-d Virtualization broken w/C1 stepping

The description of what VT-d is exactly is blown a little out of proportion. It's not that ALL virtualization capabilities are not present. In fact, VT-d isn't even an option in some of the original Sandy Bridge models, although they still supported VT-x...

    what is a "ramp issue"?

There are various issues that pop up with a new process. "Yield" is an issue related to each wafer. "Ramping" is related to the entire production. You can have very high yield (99.9%), but only be able to produce 1000 wafers per month for several months in a row due to other production...

    Indilinx (OCZ) Arowana reviews?

Attitude? I ask about reviews (it's even the thread title). You come in providing a link to a preview (yourself implying it is a review), which I mistakenly refer to as a review, and you ever so kindly point out is a preview. You insult and demean the one person that provided at least some...

    Indilinx (OCZ) Arowana reviews?

Fine. Let me try to clarify even more. That is a preview of pre-release Martini firmware from November 2010, and not a review of a production model with Arowana firmware. It's odd that you are the one stressing that it is a preview, but also making an argument that it is valid for determining...

The arowana firmware is not yet available to previous Vertex drives. Firmware 1.7 is not arowana. Vertex Turbo is not arowana. The most up to date info seems to be here: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?88696-Arowana-FW-when&p=672258&viewfull=1#post672258. That drive does...

    Indilinx (OCZ) Arowana reviews?

Ok, so OCZ announced this supposedly amazing firmware for Indilinx drives back in May. OCZ drives with this new firmware are shipping, and in fact Newegg ran a promo on those drives which sold out. So... the drives are out there, but no reviews? I found out that the drive I purchased last year...

XFX Bilking the masses - replacing GDDR5 memory with DDR3

The OP is completely at fault for not researching carefully. Referencing Wikipedia as fact is NOT research. There was no fine print. Non-standard cards are COMMON. Are you telling me that OP didn't look at ANY other cards and compare clockspeeds or any other features? If that is the case, then...

Why aren't people waiting for socket 2011?

I have to agree with most responses here, but the following points in particular. You can get USB 3 on virtually every motherboard out there right now. Many of those are running it off of enough PCIe lanes to ensure sufficient bandwidth. "Native" or not is irrelevant. PCIe 3 is nothing but a...

I believe they are using black sockets to easily distinguish the boards from those that do not support AM3+. I want to use this thread to collect information about the AM3/AM3+/800-series/900-series mess. Essentially, AMD is holding back information that could have a significant impact on those of us who are ready to make purchases now. What is particularly puzzling is that AMD has released more...

Is AMD's AM3+ the end of the line for the AM3 Series of sockets?

Well, in the case of 754, everyone knew that 939 was coming. I waited for 939 and was not disappointed. I view AM3+ as a way to get a cheap PhII now (I picked up a 965BE for $140) and then move to BD down the road. However, my guess is that AM3+ doesn't have a long future ahead.

Question for my Fellow AM3 owners.

Picking nits at this point of the "who said what" discussion. AMD clearly showed AM3 in the slides. Question for my Fellow AM3 owners.

Clearly the socket and chipset are two different things. However, let's look at another example, quite similar to the one you provided. 680i SLI was for socket 775, and worked with both Conroe and Penryn. It would not however work with quad core Penryn. It would only work with dual core Penryn...

Question for my Fellow AM3 owners.

Other: I have not purchased AM3, but I would like to purchase an AM3+ board with an AM3 processor. What I am finding more and more frustrating, nearly by the day, is that AMD has provided quite a bit of information about Bulldozer, but very little of it is actually useful to someone wondering...
