    No display on startup

I popped out the video card and cleaned the contacts with isopropyl alcohol before reinserting (although there didn't appear to be any oxidation). I also turned off the power switch on the PSU and then turned it on again before starting up the computer. I noticed that it seemed a bit weak at...

    No display on startup

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll get some Deoxit or contact cleaner, clean the video card contacts and reseat it. Unfortunately I don't have onboard video on this mobo. The card has two DVI connectors and I've tried both of them. I'll also see if I can borrow a different video card to test with.

    No display on startup

My computer has been boxed up in storage for the past year and a half and I just set it up at my new place last night - I'm not getting any video display when I start it up. It's 5 years old but has only been used for 3.5 (i.e. because it was stored for the last year and a half) The fans for...

    Does the plane take off?

We could use more Virgins in Canada :P. As for Canadian Airlines...good riddance

Have you ever ordered a beer with lunch?

Industrial environments, hell no - safety is paramount. Agreed. My office here in Aus - you're a social pariah if you don't have one or two (or more) at 4 on Friday afternoon.

Was in a real Apple Store for the first time yesterday.

When I was in Perth, my office was a 3 min walk from the Apple store downtown. Sometimes I'd go hang out in front of the store at lunch and use the free wifi, which was three times faster than the paid wifi at the hostel :D.

How long is your daily commute?

Just over 1km; 15 min walk.

Bit of an emotional wreck right now.

I did a BCIT certificate during evenings while working a day job, a few years ago. Fairly busy, but it was manageable, and I still had some free time on the weekends. Good plan.

All Canadians report to this thread, I repeat, all Canadians report to this thread

Oh god, the memories! :awe: my Mom used to make KD with cut up weiners (boiled though, not fried), maybe once a week when I was a kid. Loved it. And she always used a little bit of milk. Not sure about you freaks who only use butter or water . Nowadays I'm more of a health freak so I...

Bit of an emotional wreck right now.

    1. Learn to deal with change. Life is full of it; only some of it of your own making. The better you adapt, the better you will thrive. 2. Don't make excuses based on your personality type. I'm an introvert and into routines, like you, and I've not only lived on my own for several years...

Bit of an emotional wreck right now.

No doubt he's missing it. Without a challenge or obstacle to overcome, you cannot expect to fail, and thus eventually succeed and grow. I disagree with you though, in that he could take at least one simple step to challenge himself and grow: move into his own place. There is nothing stopping...

    100,000 miles for AT

Thought I'd pop in after a bit of a hiatus :). I've been in Australia since the start of April, on a working holiday. I was training infrequently, but I did manage a 14.6k tempo run in just under 55 min, so I was in decent shape. Did my foot in as a result of that run (tendinitis I think?) and...

    Jack Layton 1950-2011

Jack was a personable, optimistic and charismatic man, qualities that are too often lacking in many of our MPs today. I believe he was a force for change in our country. Canada has lost a great public figure far too soon. RIP Jack.

    Amy Winehouse dead

Alcohol withdrawal is actually more dangerous than opiate withdrawal, and can be fatal if not undertaken with professional supervision. Opiate withdrawal, while extremely uncomfortable, is rarely fatal.

I am so tired of people asking me if I want "my own kids"

Yep. It's more common than we would like to admit. Little wonder the divorce rate is so high nowadays. That said, I'm not against adoption, and I think under the right circumstances, it can be a wonderful thing. If it hasn't been mentioned already though, I think it's a completely different...

    Would you?

I wouldn't make a special trip to Toronto just to do it, but I could be convinced. I think I'm less fearful of heights than when I tried to stand on the glass floor of the CN tower as a 15 year old (and nearly shit myself).

Why do people brush and floss in public washrooms?

Might as well take him up on the offer :P

Why do people brush and floss in public washrooms?

Not common, but not weird or gross either. Unlike that dude at my last job who clipped his fingernails at his desk. WTF.

Why do people brush and floss in public washrooms?

Why do people piss in public washrooms? There's usually a bush somewhere close by.

WTF to do in Calgary Canada? Where can I get some cuban cigars?

This. Remember them both from family vacations as a child. Lake Louise is also a must-see. Unfortunately you missed the Stampede, which was earlier this month. For kids, it's good old-fashioned entertainment - rodeo, chuckwagon races, etc. For adults it's a friggin' orgy. Seriously, there is a...

    What's your favourite chocolate bar?

Ooh, I'd forgotten about those . They're pretty rare IIRC, but they are tasty. On a related note, I've been having Nutella and PB together on my morning toast lately. Nomnom .

    What's your favourite chocolate bar?

They're still good, but Snickers are better. Anyways, I don't see them on the shelves down in Aus, but Snickers are abundant, so it's an easy choice (on the rare days when I feel like a candy bar).

    What's your favourite chocolate bar?

For candy bars, Snickers or Twix (used to like Oh Henry when I was a kid). For proper chocolate, Lindt 85%.

Have you ever dealt with a recruiter?

Definitely...and I was referring to in-person networking. I'm aware of the shortcomings of Linkedin. For instance, a few months ago, one of my friends mentioned in conversation that he was looking to hire another electrician to work for his father's business. Then, when I was hanging out with...

Have you ever dealt with a recruiter?

I've worked with several recruiters in Sydney as I didn't have many connections when I got here. I've found that the recruiters with agencies specific to my industry have been much more helpful than the general agencies, who will try to slot you into any shit position they have available. As...

How Hot outside is it by you?!?!

True haha. Thinking about going to Darwin and Alice Springs next, since the Darwin Festival is in mid-August. Really want to see part of Kakadu National Park. It's the dry season so the weather should be good. Then I might come back to Sydney and head up the east coast with a friend. Going...
