Wireless Private LAN for Small Business

Hey all, I'm building a Private LAN for my academic research lab, and need some advice. We will be syncing around 10 client computers with one central data backup computer, and I wanted to get some input on routers / USB adapters. We will need a Wireless N router, 10 Wireless N adapters...

    Data recovery on work computer

Well, in the "Boy Do I Feel Stupid" moment of the day, it turns out that the IT department figured out the problem. The jumper was set to Slave instead of Master. So, apparently someone decided to open the case and fiddle with the jumper. Naturally, when I opened the case, I figured that the...

New Custom Build for Server Application

Hey all, My boss decided that we need to network all of our computers together in our research laboratory for data backup and storage (after we just had a HD fail). However, he's adamant against a home build for warranty reasons, so he's leaving it to me to get some information. However...

Thanks all. Luckily we're on a university campus, so we may have an on-site IT department capable of this. I appreciate your input!

    Data recovery on work computer

Hey all, As the resident guy in my research lab who knows ANYTHING about computers, I was tasked today with recovering research data from a drive that crashed. I know, in before "lol backup." Anyways, I extracted the drive from the tower and plugged it into an external USB enclosure...

    Headset help!

Thanks for your input! Is that just because it's a wireless headset that matches my price range, or is it actually quality? I'm afraid my original post may have been too specific. Anywhere from 60-115 ish would be fine, depending on the quality and durability, and wireless was just a...

    Headset help!

Hey guys, I'm currently in the market for a new headset, and I was thinking that a wireless option might be good for me. My tactic for the last few years was to buy mediocre headsets, because no matter what happens the microphones always seem to die out on me one way or another. I've tended...

    i5 stock HSF question

Hey guys, So all my parts came today for my new build, excepting my third party HSF... which clearly won't arrive until at least Monday now. However, I'm really impatient to get this new computer up and running! Is the thermal paste that comes pre-applied to the stock Intel HSF adhesive...

    Bottom mounted PSU intake fan

Hey guys, I'm installing my new PSU into my new case, and it's a bottom mounted, with the intake fan pulling from beneath the case, through a mesh. Since I keep my towers on the floor (albeit a wood floor), what will this do in terms of dust intake? I'm tempted to point the intake fan...

    Should I partition my drive?

Hey guys, I'm building my new computer (most of the parts came today), and I'm debating partitioning my 1TB drive, as I can't afford SSD. One partition would be for OS files, and the rest would be for whatever other shenanigans. What's the thoughts of the collective? I've never...

Is it possible to OC a laptop?

Oh, we're not stopping him. Ethically, we just want to make sure he has "informed consent." :-P

Is it possible to OC a laptop?

Considering I've had laptops fry on their own accord simply from being used over time, I definitely wouldn't recommend this. I had a laptop I used as my work computer, due to being a uni student who'd go on exchanges frequently. After two years, I had hardware failure due to heat death. Was...

Heat Sink + Fan recommendations for i5

Well, considering I was comparing it to http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/prolimatech-megahalems-cpu-cooler.html, that's still not quite pygmy hippo sized :-P Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have to look that one up. Ok, this'll make me sound like a huge newbie, but I have to ask: what...

    i5 750 upgrade help

Looks like we both just posted very similar posts. I've heard good things about that Megahalems, so if you're doing an significant overclock, the collective has suggested it to me. I also downgraded to the 3R motherboard, as I won't be running SLI, and the on-board audio codec was actually...

Heat Sink + Fan recommendations for i5

Hey guys, I just bought my new build, and was debating doing a mild overclock of the i5 processor I got. I read a bunch of reviews / guides on overclocking this sucker, but all of them seem to go for the hardcore OC that requires a heat sink approximately the size of your face. I was...

    SSD advice

Hey guys, I just bought most of the parts for a new build, and I was debating throwing in a SSD into there as well. I was browsing Newegg, and I ran into this interesting bit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820139004 Basically, it looks like the exact same drive, but one...

    Thermal Paste questions

Hey guys, I'm looking to build a new i5 core pc, and I'm looking to do some minimal overclocking. Since I've never done any OCing before, I always just ran with the default cooling that came in the cpu box, and I know next to nothing about this stuff. All I can recall is that, back in the...

    Requesting suggestions on build

Thanks guys :-D Lastly, would you suggest overclocking? I spoke with a friend of mine about it, and he said it was pretty much a waste of time / money for the applications I'd be using. However, I've read that it's much easier now than it used to be (barring enormous processor heat sinks)...

    Requesting suggestions on build

Haha yeah I managed to both forget an OS, AND an aftermarket fan+heatsink for the processor. Amazing how it's the small things that you always leave out... I'll be using Windows 7, free of charge, thanks to the deal MS has with my Uni. I don't know anything regarding aftermarket cooling for...

    Requesting suggestions on build

Considering that the mobo and the i5 are only 1333 compatable, 1600 memory would be downclocked. However, is 0.05v really that much higher than 1.5 -1.6? What kind of performance difference will I be seeing, and will it have a significant impact on overclocking my processor? I've never OC'd...

    Requesting suggestions on build

Any particular brands that you'd suggest for the memory? I selected the module primarily due to the CAS timings, and the name "patriot." Also, according to a few reviews, people found that the performance drop from WD Black to Green wasn't too staggering. Considering that the Green has...

    Requesting suggestions on build

Hey guys, I'm looking to create a PC for office work, gaming, and general multimedia. Looking to build the entire thing for around $1,000, but I'm willing to go up a little to get the best performance vs price ratio. Will be buying from the US, intend to do a little overclocking, and I'm...

    [Retired] The LCD Thread

When looking at the recommended lcd's for gaming, the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA was ranked 3rd on the list... I'm looking at buying a new LCD monitor, as my Samsung SyncMaster 204B is dying, and is (of course) two months past warranty date. While this was ranked under gaming, the specs say it...

    SSD for OS drive only?

Hey guys, I know that SSD drives have insanely high performance boosts over the traditional magnetic head drives, but compared to the cost per gigabyte of the magnetics, I can't justify getting a large SSD. Because of this, I was wondering whether I should get a small-ish SSD (maybe 64...

    Looking to build new PC

Thanks, I read the stickies and I understand a bit more about things :-D I'm still rather confused on the performance / price difference between i7 and older intel cores. (Please keep in mind that I've never overclocked, and I wouldn't even know where to start from that). My worry is that...

    Looking to build new PC

Hey all, I'm currently in the need of building a new system. My current system is 3 years old and is starting to show its age (due to fans starting to die and spontaneous system reboots). Unfortunately, in these past couple years I haven't really been keeping up with the market, and I don't...

    Issues with new memory

Alright, so I tried this... didn't work. I then attempted to just put a single stick of memory in at a time, testing each slot; slots 3 and 4 (lower 2, Channel B) didn't work. The little LED error light came on next to it. Looks like the mobo is damaged or I forgot a jumper somewhere...

    Issues with new memory

@ mechBgon: Ok I passed my dumb-level for the day and realized that DDR333 setting is 166MHz (hence the D in the name). Set it, but didn't work. Same error noise. I'm thinking the mobo might be damaged... thoughts?

    Issues with new memory

@ mechBgon: Thanks for this; I'm checking some stuff out. You were right about the DDR333 settings, so I'm checking that out now. @bwatson283: I can supposedly support 4 gigs, and I'm only attempting to use 3. I just need to figure out how to work this mobo... thanks guys!

    Issues with new memory

Well this is odd: DRAM voltage was set to 2.6 (memory is 2.6 - 2.8) which is normal... but apparently the DRAM frequency was on AUTO, but I can only set it to 200. Upon further note, the motherboard FSB was set to 200... I checked, and can be set to as high as 456; 200 is as low as possible...

    Computer performance recently slowed significantly

    Computer performance recently slowed significantly

No, it doesn't, hence my confusion. I haven't tried uninstalling it though, checking my performance, and re-installing it. Was thinking about that, but then realized that many of the programs I'd use to subjectively benchmark (ie games) are online... but I could run purely objective ones...
