    Small, efficient, streaming media server

Hmmm... may have to give DD-WRT a try but that will have to wait. For the server, I think I'd rather start with a new storage drive. Plan B is that we can get to the video files by mapped drive and play with GOM or something, but first I want to try out the Subsonic server on it to transcode and...

    Small, efficient, streaming media server

Hello! 1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing. Main functions: - storage and access for audio, video, photo, and ebook files (300+ gigs currently) - would like to serve audio and video to 2 laptops within the home, and stream audio to myself at...

When did the internet become publicly available?

I had a netcom account in 1994 on the pre-browser internet...way before the ix'ers. Thankfully, it looks like I was successful in having my old usenet posts removed by google. Usenet posts were *supposed* to expire and go away!! Remember when aol'ers were given access to the actual...

Ha! Found an archive for Compute Magazine. Also found the article for SpeedScript, a word processor in 6k and the machine language code for it: http://www.atarimagazines.com/compute/issue58/speed_script.html Damn...I typed all that in at least twice...seriously wouldn't have the time or...

    Commodore 64 is BACK!

Wasn't there a magazine that had programs you could type in? I used to keep my computer on for days without turning it off so I wouldn't lose all that. I first upgraded to the cassette recorder, which was soooo fricken unreliable, then finally saved for the floppy drive.

mobo problem - can't run ram in dual channel

What I'm gathering from the manuals is that this first rev of this motherboard has the ram slots side-by-side per channel, and the 2 newer revs that was changed to be alternating. Dunno if that's fishy or if it's just what it is. Tried clearing cmos, running the ram slower, still same. May just...

mobo problem - can't run ram in dual channel

As far I can tell from the manual (page 16), there isn't a bios setting for it. It should be a matter of populating the slots right. Dual should be slots 1 & 2 or 3 & 4, but the problem is that it won't post if I'm using 2 or 4. It seems like it's a motherboard problem to me. What kinda of...

mobo problem - can't run ram in dual channel

I have a Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H rev 2.0 motherboard and I can't run a stick of memory in ram slot 2 or 4. Single sticks work fine in slots 1 and 3. But if I try 2 sticks in slots 1 & 2 or in 3 & 4 (which is supposed to be dual-channel mode according to the manual and on board color-coding) it...

    system/temperature monitoring software

Do you use tools for ongoing monitoring of things like temperature? I can look at HWMonitor and such while I'm tweaking until I get something I think is stable, but I'd like something running that'll alert me proactively if my temps whack out a couple months from now. One option I see is...

A good while back I know I read somewhere that a current am3 board *might* be made am3+ compatible with a bios update (if the board manufacturer decided to provide one). Did anyone else see that? Everything I've read recently indicates that will not be the case and in fact the new chip won't...

troubleshoot old dying laptop (eMachines M5310)

Success! Turns out this thing has a well-documented heat problem. Some new thermal grease and blowing out the cat hair from the heat exchanger (which can only be done by taking it apart) seems to have done the trick. Props to Dan East over at the dexplor forums for posting detailed pics back...

What's the hip web host these days?

Check out Dreamhost. Dunno if I'd recommend them for a heavy production site, but for a developers playground, sure. Shell access, secure access, unlimited domains and mysql dbs. I haven't used their vps, so you'll have to compare features there.
