if you image the drive there would be no need to run the utility. I have used the maxtor tools to copy partitions.. works great on them.. have not used the WD tools to migrate date.. I use ghost or Drive Image to migrate my drives

Are you plugging into the usb ports at the back of the motherboard or the ports cabled out to the front of the case. If it is the ports cabled out to the front you may be running into a low power issue. try the ports at the back of the board.
