I have this Lite-On and this I/O Magic (actually a BenQ drive). No problems with them so far, and very nice prices. One thing though, the Lite-On doesn't have a power button, which is a bit annoying.

Before reformatting, try taking the HDD out and get one of these. Worth a try to see if you can access the HDD that way and backup the data on it. Also try calling Dell maybe? See if they know anything about having an override code or something...worth a shot. Good luck.

Its probably one of those "add to cart to see special price" kind of things. I just tried and it gave me $59.99 after adding to cart also.

If you need big zoom, make sure it has image stabilization. Otherwise it'll be useless with out a tripod. If big zoom is not a high priority, I'd suggest the Canon A610, which can be had for around $200, and is EXCELLENT in terms of speed and quality.

OK, I have 2 DVD writers, one is a Lite-On SHW-1635SX and the other is another external from I/O Magic. The problem is with RW media. First up, DVD+RW (Sony 4x): ---------------------- I got these Sony DVD+RWs, and basically the Lite-On can't write to it. It gives me an error each time...

I think you should. $1300 for that system is too much.

VLC is definitely the best. No need to d/l codecs, and it comes it both versions - .exe and precompiled binary (no need to install, just unzip and run). Here's a direct link to their d/l page.
