Deliberately, artificially and actively crippling your competitors is completely different from giving access to something that is specific to your architecture. Even though the end result and motives may be the same, there is a legitimate reason for the lack of openess.

That mantle was the api in the Xbox was a rumour and a questionable one at that. It doesn't have to be a carbon copy to meet its goals. Please explain how mantle in falling apart

Mantle is still in its infancy, and they obviously do have a specification and an SDK, its just not public

One can only hope that porting between DX, mantle and the console APIs will be as hassle free as possible. I mostly agree with everything in this post though.
