Even if it was (and it is with distributed computing), with the current settings in your home network, you wouldn't see barely any performance increase. It might actually slow down your system in games.
It basically boils down to how much you want to spend. Yes, Intel has a higher MhZ chip, but for the amount I spend extra on that Intel chip, I could save the cash, get a ripping 3d card and whoop all y'all in 3dmark scores! :)
It's all about legacy computers running in offices. The motto "If it's not broke, why fix it" comes to mind. For simple, small, data transfer 3.5 inch disks are fine for all intents and purposes.
