    How tight is too tight?

lol @ aigomorla Thanks for all the great replies. Before I drop another $200 on this box I'm going to spend a couple of hours and inspect the pins. I've run memtest on the original sticks of RAM a few times thanks to a problem I'm having with my GTX 480...

    How tight is too tight?

Just to clarify, I'm talking about CPU coolers ;) I just installed new RAM to discover that two of my four DIMM slots are bad :( Right off the bat I'm thinking bent CPU pins, my fan is too tight, or bad mobo. This got me to thinking, how tight is too tight? I have a coolermaster hyper...

GTX 480 going thermal in 2D

Thanks for the replies. I have the fan set to 60% now, so that seems to solve it. I don't really mind the noise. I'll play with my case and fans and try to improve airflow. I'll also try and downclock. Thanks!

GTX 480 going thermal in 2D

After troubleshooting my PC constantly freezing, I finally determined the cause: my GTX is overheating and crashing while in 2D. Has anyone else had this problem? What's a good way to cool the GTX 480 that doesn't include fitting my rig with a toilet and 2 sinks (i.e. water cooling)...

    Computer Freezing... during startup?

I've been doing hardware a long time, but I've never run into this. I'm hoping someone has some insight. My computer started freezing yesterday. I came back to it and it was just 'stuck'. Reboot, whatever, it was probably a really bad crash. Then it kept happening (3 more times that day)...

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Didn't you say you were going to do the step-up program? Don't you have 2 5870's?

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Thanks Hauk. I appreciate your candor. Happy this is behind me and I can play BFBC2 with the settings all cranked up again.

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Thanks to Anand and the great Leadership at EVGA for resolving this issue. I received a call from the Director of Technical Marketing at EVGA regarding the issue. He explained to me that the first 470 arriving was indeed a mishap and that was something they are resolving internally. Sometimes...

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Well I received another card. It was definitely a card in much better condition than the last two. It doesn't look like it's ever been installed, either, so that makes me happy. I'm sending the other two back, but a word of caution to anyone who participates in this program: keep an eye out for...

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Damn. Wonder if that's my fault. Let me know if you get a GTX 480 with some resin marks =P

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

    They cross-shipped the 2nd 480 overnight and it looks like they're cross-shipping me a 3rd 480. We'll see how this one arrives.

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Thanks :) Yeah EVGA's been really good to me in the past and they have a great reputation. I think that if this was common then more people would be posting to this thread, so it's bittersweet: I'm relieved that EVGA's reputation is legit (american company! :) :)) and sad that when something...

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

*edit* this is where the tech told me my 470 was 'definitely' a 480 and that I should open the box. Then she tells me it's 'definitely' a 470 and she's getting me a new serial number. Of course at this point I just called. Read from the bottom up... RE: GTX 470 Step-up‏ From...

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Here's the pic of the sticker from the original 470. This is how it came in the box. The file just came off as I was gripping the card. Then I noticed the sticker and was like, "Ok that definitely didn't happen at the factory. It's an RMA'd card". There's enough evidence for me to reasonably...

NVIDIA Step-Up: Got 2 used cards!

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify, the second card was factory sealed: EVGA "QC Checked" stickers and all. I imagine at this point the RMA department has the QC stickers and shrink-wrap machine. It's pretty unlikely that a 470 left the factory with a 480 sticker, and that a 480 left...
