Not with the 812S.
The maximum read speed is 12x for DVD-ROM media, 8x for DVD±R media...
You can however upgrade your drive to an 832S, which enables DVD+R DL burning.
Here is a custom firmware that also improves burn quality:

While it is rare to find, yes there are some standalones that are programmed to explicitly deny the use of DVD+R discs (even with DVD-ROM booktype).
This is all due to politics and an attempt to promote DVD-R over DVD+R.
4Q 2005 according to Philips. Philips demo'ed a functional internal Blu-Ray/DVD±R/CD-R burner for me at CES.
Although the drive and media will be very expensive.
And BR disc use will not be widespread for another few years.

A DVD-ROM booktype on a DVD+R will cause standalone players to treat the disc just like a pressed DVD-ROM disc.

Here are a few things you can try:
Try replacing the IDE cable.
Turn of Windows XP CD burning services (IMAPI).
Disable/uninstall packet writing programs if applicable.
Use the generic Microsoft IDE Controller drivers instead of Nvidia or Via, etc.
Try installing the drive as a solitary...
I have quite a few. I usually try to label all of them but it doesn't always happen.
Although I usually *do* know what is on most of them since the majority of my discs contain test data from Nero CD-DVD Speed create data disc.
:D
