Show me how the A64 is faster and cheaper, especially since I don't have any 64-bit apps to use on it yet. My primary focus here is improving a/v editing/processing times. I did a little bit of research on that proc but I just don't know if it will serve as useful for what I want to do.

Give me an alternative mobo/cpu pair to look at, this upgrade is primarily aimed at helping me do more video editing/processing. The P4 3.4 is $270, while the equiv. A64 is about $260...

I've been using the Memorex dvd+r 8x discs for a few months, no coasters yet! ;) FWIW I have the optorite dd1601 burner.

My mistake! Just checked, the laptop is a P4M 1.4ghz, not 1.2. Even still I am surprised it still outruns the AMD desktop despite the obvious storage bottleneck.

I can attest that my dinky P4M 1.2ghz laptop (with 512mb ram and an ata-66 4200rpm drive) will handily outrun my desktop Athlon Tbird 1.4ghz (with 256mb and multiple uata/100 7200rpm drives) when it comes to any kind of video processing... strangely the Athlon is faster with audio though...
