Thanks guys, found the problem, masteryoda called it. The 3rd dimm slot must be bad. Ran fine with each stick separately in the first slot. So I moved them both to the 2nd and 4th slot respectively. So far so good. going to let it run for a bit to see if it holds.

I'm installing a new cpu+mobo+ram and reusing old components. It booted up ok but then freezes after about 30 seconds to 2 minutes. I am reusing the hdd which has windows xp already on it, but it will freeze if I never leave the bios or boot from the optical drive. So I can enter windows, but...

You guys called it. I went ahead and got a 4670 with the funds I had available. It made the graphics slightly better and I get much better fps when there is not much activity in the vicinity, but loading times and heavy activity is still bogging me down. Definitely need a new cpu + more ram...

Thanks for the replies thus far. I'm assuming that the cpu is not choking me off too much and to definitely get a better card to get to where I need to be. The question is, get and ultra cheap card + additional ram, or stretch as much as I can just for the card and reuse it in a new build...
