I used to work with one powerful desktop for all my computing needs. But due to a lot of field-trip study, I decided to switch for a laptop.
So far I didn't feel any significant speed decrease switching from AthlonXP 2Ghz -to-> Mobile Pentium 4 1.9Ghz; But I really miss the fast transfer rate...
For Win2k: 256Mb is enough
For WinXP:
I'll vote for 512!

If you think you're gonna install multiple OS (Virtual PCs), crank it up to 1,024Mb.
Once I read from a site that says 16k performs better (I set mine to it, and no performance problem so far). But I forgot what the site is, he actually compare and benchmarked all the results. I'll post a follow up once I found it back..
