ok, just update my BIOS and noticed my CPU temp went up to 65C! After a reboot it shows a more believealbe 38C. But the problem still remains. I guess it must be the PSU. I'll try to get my hands on another one if I can.
thanks for the help and I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
thanks for the encouragement. Just noticed I typed 4200... I meant PC3200 DDR400 RAM. so no one reckons it might be the power supply at fault? I'll do the BIoS update now anyway to see if it works....
sorry, did not see your post :o
unfortunately I don't have another stick to try with at the moment. The PC runs 100% stable with default clocks and ram at the default 2.5-3-3-6. The issue seems to be no POST on first power up. I'll go ahead with that BIoS update and see if it fixes things...
no I haven't. I downloaded the latest BIOS updates but it doesn't mention anything about having a fix for this problem. I generally don't update the BIOS unless it fixes some stablity issue or adds a new feature. do you think the BIOS miight be the problem?
Furthermore, what other problems is...
I've just assembled an Athlon 64 3000+ with a MSI Neo K8T mobo and PC3200 GEIL Value RAM.
The trouble is whenever I turn on the PC for the first time (i.e. after connecting the mains to the power supply) it doesn't POST. The LED on the D-bracket shows 4 red lights (the manual describes it as a...
mechBgon:
thanks for your post and links. I've just finished reading Ace's article and am convinced. I'm definitely going for 64bit :D
Thanks guys for the heads up.
yes, it is a hard choice.
I suppose if I went for the A64 3000+, I'd most likely try to overclock it to around 2.2Ghz but I wonder if I'd manage with just DDR400. Any idea if A64 mobos (VIA K8T800) have DRAM timings as a percentage of the FSB like in the K7 mobos?
Any more opinions...
64C is awfully hot, you are going to burn something unless you either:
- reduce the ambient temp in the case by adding case fans to the front and rear so you have air that flows in from the front and out from the rear. A side panel fan will help introduce fresh air into the case near the CPU...
I'm looking to build a new PC and was wondering which of the 2 is worth buying at the moment, the Athlon 64 3000+ or P4 2.8C?
I know the A64 is definitely faster than the 2.8C at stock speeds but I plan to overclock the P4 to ~3.5ghz (FSB 250 on stock cooling with FSB:RAM ratio at 5:4) if I do...
