Working on a friend's machine. His power supply fan motor burned out. After replacing the PS, I tried to boot the machine (he's running Win98). The machine locks up during Windows load. Doing a step-by-step, I noticed that the lockup occurs after loading the dfs.vxd file. Not sure if this...
And absolutely positively do not attempt to do a hard drive upgrade from 98SE to WinXP. The only good way to install WinXP is clean. Better than 90% of the people who complain to me about WinXP have problems because they had Win98SE and ran the upgrade program.
Just say "No".
Save your stuff...
Just remember, folks, you can't get warranty service from AMD for their Boxed set processors without the HS/F. If your processor fries in 2 years and you call AMD for replacement, they will ask for the serial number on the HS/F. They also won't send you a new one until you've sent back the...
Spend the $3 at your local drug store and buy some razor blades. They do an excellent job of spreading (using a very light touch, obviously, since you don't want to gouge the die) and clean easily for re-use.
It's an AGP card. It sits in an AGP slot. Every motherboard I've ever had with an AGP slot shares an IRQ with the PCI slot next to it. So it's silly to put anything in the PCI slot next to the AGP card anyway. Sooo . . . . since that slot is pretty much useless, why not put it to good use...
I don't care what you people say. I don't even care how cocky this guy is. Except for that yellow abomination, these cases are gorgeous. I think I'll be contacting you sometime soon. I'm not sure I can resist now. But first I have to find just the right look...
*nod* What Ark said. It sounds like you set up the BIOS to boot from CD for the XP installation. That's fine. But after the driver and file load step, when it goes to reboot, you need to interrupt it and switch the first boot device to something other than your CD drive (floppy or HDD-0)...
Interesting question. Now that you mention it, this is the second installation I have had problems with using this CD. While not a backup, it's not a packaged Microsoft product either. My university has a distribution agreement with Microsoft that allows the university to duplicate and...
It's been my experience that auto-shutoff when shutting down the OS tends to be a motherboard feature. If you haven't done so already, I would suggest that you look through your BIOS options and try some things. Pay special attention to any settings regarding things that are allowed to wake...
*fondly remembers the old days when he had money to blow for no particularly good reason*
...
*realizes that such a memory must be from a past life because that's certainly never happened in this lifetime!*
Sounds sweet. Have fun ;)
