try Divx 6.0 beta and pray that with the release of MacOSX Tiger apple will release H.264 for windows users as well.... that will give you up to 4 times greater compression rate ... without losing any quality compared to divx

I had a NEC 4x for 2 years and burned more than 600 dvds and it still works (my brother has it) currently I am using a Pioneer 108 16x and it works like charm any LiteON Pioneer or NEC will do the job .. and statistically the last a LOT!
