    Direct3D: What's the advantage

I'd have to research it a bit, but I think that glide is totally different than Open GL. 3dfx created the API on their own, and from what I understand, it sux to program for. I don't know anything about programming, but that's the general consensus (from reviews I've seen). Anyway, I am a...

    Direct3D: What's the advantage

I am not one of those "I hate microsoft!" clones, but I really do hate d3d. I have always disliked it. I think it is slower and uglier than open gl. I really wish 3dfx had kept their act together, because glide rox. The only thing is, I hear it's a bear to program for. As for d3d...

    Scandisk/Defrag Utility for NT 4.0??

I am looking for a free or inexpensive scandisk and defrag utility for NT 4.0 Can anyone recommend one? It doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, just a basic defragmenter. I need it for work, but so if it's a good one, I wouldn't mind having my boss fork out the bucks, but free is...

Low Quake3 scores with Geforce2 MX

I know zilch about Win ME, but a guy on another section said he had probs with low fps in quack. He had 128 MB of ram and another guy told him 256 is minimum. He said he ran UT w/ 128 mb while he had his other 128 stick in another system and his fps dropped from 150 to 17. That seems a bit...

Need new fans in my pc...plz help choose the right ones

If I was looking for a hardcore overclocking fan, I would go for the new alphaReview as reviewed. If you are looking for more economical, but louder approaches, I would go with the GlobalWin VGS08H, with 6000 rpm fans. The Heatsink Guide can help you with your woes, if you desire to look...

    "Random" reboots...help, please.

LOL, that reminds me of my first system. I was one of the dopes that bought a cyrix before anyone knew what floating point was and how important it was to games (doh!). Anyway, anytime I worked it hard, particularly in descent 2, it would spontaneously reboot. Right in the middle of the game...

    COM & LPT Ports

This question may seem basic, but I am confused with regards to com/lpt ports. If you disable them in the bios, sometimes windows finds them at the default irq/memory. Sometimes, you must enable them for a device to use them. I have even had situations where the bios would automatically...

Can 100 MHz FSB Durons/Athlons work with 133 MHz FSB?

I'd prolly say the hdd is the bottleneck. But if he's playing Unreal tourney, the problem could be RAM. I would say that for almost every game out there today though, his system is good enuf.

How long did it take you to build your first system....

I personally have a hard time with anyone who said they did their first puter in under 2 or 3 hours. Maybe I was extremely green when I built my first one, but it took me forever. I built one with the first SDRAM available, and it wasn't compatible with my mobo, which was not posted anywhere...

Tech Question: why only 2 ide controllers?

I guess I just take it the wrong way when someone says ANYTHING positive about a macintosh :P You are right, though, RISC processors do inherently have better FPU. I am not sure that would be enough reason in and of itself to turn to RISC though. Integer operations are important in everyday...

Pentium 4 gets bitch slapped by 1.2GHz Athlon??

It's so sad to see Intel slipping like this. I used to be a hardcore Intel fan, until AMD started actually competing. The K6-2, IMO was not much of a gaming machine (compared to the 300A's), but the Athlon/Duron/Thunderbird seem to finally have Intel worried. I almost think it's too late for...

Tech Question: why only 2 ide controllers?

I would like to agree that RISC processors are FPU friendly, however, because of the lower clock speeds, single tasking OS, and lack of support for gaming (which is primarily what FPU is used for), G4's lag behind. I would, however, like to see a new architecture. x86 should die soon...
