In the past, I've used SpeedFan to monitor CPU temps and control the speed of the fans in my desktop. But it doesn't appear to work with my eMachines M6807. Is there anything similar for notebooks, specifically the eMachines M6807?

Averatec has some silver colored notebooks. I don't think they look nearly as sleek as my Powerbook though.

System Preferences -> Appearance Turn off text smoothing for font sizes ___ and smaller. This is a global setting for OS X. I'm not sure if/how if affects MS Word. On a side note, it may be worth checking out Abiword.

My 15" 1.5Ghz Powerbook came in about a week ago. Customizations: 128 VRAM 512 Ram - 1 stick Combo Drive 5400 80GB I downgraded the SuperDrive. Although tempting, I have yet to use the DVD burner on my eMachines M6807, so I didn't think I would get much use out of it on my Powerbook either...

I chose the 15". I could use the extra screen space for development IDEs. The PC card slot may come in handy later too. It was a tough decision. If you have an apple store around, go try them both out.

Also look into the student Apple Developer Connection (ADC) if you decide to go the powerbook route. With the ADC discount, the 15" powerbook falls into your price range. But, they will verify your student status.
