    **Official eMachines M68xx Thread**

Anyone's CPU fan starting to make noises? Any recommendations for fixing it? I've started hearing a grinding/clicking noise coming from the fan. Its coming from the larger CPU fan (the one closest to the ESC-key corner). It only makes this noise some of the time. Typically, after a cold...

    WHY-OH-WHY

I've used VP7 with XP on my PowerBook. It runs ok but does require some patience. XP reports the cpu as a 686 - 295mhz. Its probably better suited for 98 or 2000. The USB ports work well with VP7 with XP. I was able to get my Leadtek WinFast USB II(tv tuner box) installed. Only the remote...

    WHY-OH-WHY

I own both an AMD 64 notebook and a 1.5Ghz 15" PowerBook. My AMD 64 notebook is definetely a powerful PC, and it was just around $1k cheaper than my PowerBook. I still prefer the PowerBook despite the extra cost. If anything, I regret the purchase of my AMD 64 notebook. The PowerBook...

    Wireless Mobile Mouse Recommendation?

I picked up a wireless MS Intellimouse Explorer 2. Its nice wireless mouse, but the wireless base is pretty large. Not what I was expecting and takes away from its mobility. I only use it with my DTR. I would suggest one with wireless base that looks like a usb key. There are quite a few...

    **Official eMachines M68xx Thread**

Anybody have a working link to the pics of the M680x internals or a guide on how to take it apart? This one doesn't appear to work anymore: http://www.kingofl337.com/emachine/ My screen flickering has got worse. I'd like to open it up and try to find the problem. That link above had...

Fan Speed control software for laptops?

In the past, I've used SpeedFan to monitor CPU temps and control the speed of the fans in my desktop. But it doesn't appear to work with my eMachines M6807. Is there anything similar for notebooks, specifically the eMachines M6807?

Of what use are WinXP/Win2k memory dumps?

I used the dumps once to isolate some bad hardware or software on my system. There is a dumpchk utility which helps you decode the information. You can read more here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=315263

Are there any PC notebooks that resemble the Apple Powerbooks?

Averatec has some silver colored notebooks. I don't think they look nearly as sleek as my Powerbook though.

iBook/powerbook Fuzy text in MS WORD?

System Preferences -> Appearance Turn off text smoothing for font sizes ___ and smaller. This is a global setting for OS X. I'm not sure if/how if affects MS Word. On a side note, it may be worth checking out Abiword.

    Decided to buy an ibook

Student Developer Discounts on the ibooks are pretty weak. The 12" iBook is $990 at the ADC store. http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html Open the "HARDWARE PURCHASE PROGRAM STORE (U.S.)" link. You will see much larger savings ($1-300 less than edu) on the Powerbook. Also with...

    How many use Powerbooks/iBooks

My 15" 1.5Ghz Powerbook came in about a week ago. Customizations: 128 VRAM 512 Ram - 1 stick Combo Drive 5400 80GB I downgraded the SuperDrive. Although tempting, I have yet to use the DVD burner on my eMachines M6807, so I didn't think I would get much use out of it on my Powerbook either...

    12" powerbook vs 15" powerbook

I chose the 15". I could use the extra screen space for development IDEs. The PC card slot may come in handy later too. It was a tough decision. If you have an apple store around, go try them both out.

    Buying my first notebook

Also look into the student Apple Developer Connection (ADC) if you decide to go the powerbook route. With the ADC discount, the 15" powerbook falls into your price range. But, they will verify your student status.
