I'm not sure if a radiator would have worked for me or not. I think the ability to go below ambient is needed for this in order to keep the CPU from deeply throttling. It often gets to 95F here in the summer.

What makes 5 platter drives less reliable? Heat? I realize that there are more read heads, is the issue that it is more likely to have a head crash?

I have confirmed this as true. I was seeing right around 20k ppd and now I am seeing closer to 26-27k ppd. I wish I would have know this a month ago. So all in all, GPU3 + -SMP 11 has given me a 22k ppd boost.
