Strange pheonomenon with USB hard drive?

Wasn't sure where to ask this, but maybe someone here has a clue. I have a 2.5" 1TB Samsung drive in a USB enclosure that I use with my laptop. It's been working with no issues since september, but suddenly in the last few days I started having an issue where the drive would randomly...

    out of curiosity...

So, some back story, I emailed a professor i had last year at a different university (1000 miles away from where I am now...) to ask if you could write me some letters of recommendation. he responded the next day saying he'd be happy to. I responded the next day giving him all the information...

is there something about having a PhD that lets you not respond to emails at all, or respond to them months after they were sent? FUCK professors. /rant.

Original IBM PC, and other old computers

They were throwing out a room full of old computers at my university, and well... I just had to take a bunch of them. I'm sitting here right now with a few original IBM 5150 PC's from 1981 (the original version), and a few HP Vectra A's from 1986. They're all in perfect working condition, and...

particle spin (any experimental physicists out there?)

So, i figured it out.... i think. So basically, it's like this: the spin quantum number s, is assigned as 0, 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2, .... the magnitude of spin, S, is given by (hbar)(s(s+1))^(1/2) the z-component of spin is given by (mz)(hbar), where mz can be given by (s, s-1, s-2, ..., -s)...

particle spin (any experimental physicists out there?)

oh, nevermind, i think i get it. it's because you quantize both the spin angular momentum, and the z-component of angular momentum with integer values.

particle spin (any experimental physicists out there?)

thanks. that's helpful. but, can you elaborate a little more on why the values must differ by 1? Why can't you have -1/2, 0, 1/2?

particle spin (any experimental physicists out there?)

yes, but how can you determine what the value for spin actually is? for example, lets say you have a bunch of particles, you don't have any idea what they are beyond some basics like their charge. how can you go about determining their value for spin? for example, if you determine the spin of...

hmm, seems fixed, except for my strange new signature... ha. thanks

    i got someone elses account??

I imported my password to the new system, but it gave me a different account. I'm supposed to be theman, joined March 2005 with 4500 posts, not theMan joined 1999 with 2 posts. what's the dealll???

particle spin (any experimental physicists out there?)

How do/did they actually determine the spins of various elementary particles experimentally? For example, how do they know the spin quantum number of the electron is ±1/2, or that all fermions have half integer spins? How would you determine this experimentally? something with spin magnetic...

i want to train a raccoon army

Does anyone have experience training raccoons? I want to train legions of raccoons and then send them after people I don't like. What's the best way to do this.

    random collections agency calls

I could get a girl to call and try to get a date with the guy. Then I could have someone on the inside.... mwhahaha.

    random collections agency calls

No, but I know someone who speaks arabic.... haha. I was thinking of doing something like, "This is Waschlinski Roofing Supply Company, how can I help you today?" When they called. But they never call at a time I can answer the phone. grrr.
