I am the same way except I've been doing it for about five years or so. If I had to go back to programming normal Java, I might want to shoot myself. It spoils you.
You can always try Alice to let him play around with the 3D aspect of things. I know one of my professors is on the team, but I never really used it myself. Just a suggestion for the 'instant' crowd.

I've been working with Grails for like two years now. I highly recommend it. Its easy to pick up if you've used Java and the front end is like JSF, but useful.
I would code in my free time, but I'm not really creative so I don't have any ideas for projects I feel like working on. I'm also not going to put much time and effort into recreating the wheel.

I just used the standard 2 week disposables. I think they are Acuvue Oasis ones. I've had this pair in since mid April and only took them out once to soak for a night.
If drinking is involved, Cash and Guns might be an amusing game, thought its not technically a board game
