    Best upgrade for Pentium 4?

Sorry I was away from the forum for the weekend. I told my wife that my official recommendation was to just retire the machine, and that is what she recommended to the office manager. This office is very cash-poor and lacks any technical sophistication. She thinks they may be able to swing a...

    Best upgrade for Pentium 4?

A pc at my wife's office is in desperate need of attention. It's an HP desktop, with a Northwood 2.4ghz P4. 512mb of ram, running Windows XP, and a 75gb hd. They have some legacy software that they are not confident will run on anything newer than XP, and they want to spend as little as...

Recommend a video card for Linux Mint 17.1 triple monitor

I haven't followed the whole discussion, so I'm sorry if I'm off base, but it appears you're looking for a dedicated card. But what cpu are you using? I've used the integrated gpu from an i7 4770 (haswell) to drive three displays from both KDE and Cinnamon. It was more than fast enough, but I...

    GTX 470 for $50 - take it?

I've got a 4770 (non-k) and I'm currently using its onboard graphics. I run linux, and up until very recently, was using the onboard to drive three displays, and I never gamed. That machine is now pretty much collecting dust, and only runs one monitors. A coworker told me he has an unused...

Thinking of getting a laptop for Linux

FYI - I had a business class HP provided by my previous company which came preloaded with Windows 7. I wiped it and put on Mint 15 KDE, and everything worked with zero compatibility issues. However, the power management was awful. The battery barely lasted an hour. I tweaked a bit, but could...

    Thoughts on the Acer c720?

I haven't tried any. I transitioned away from Windows a couple of years ago, in favor of linux, but the rest of my family is reluctant to leave windows.

    Thoughts on the Acer c720?

My wife's laptop recently died. Initially she replaced it with the Asus T100TA (^^^^ lol). Great hardware, but she hates - HATES Wndows 8. She returned it a day later and grabbed the acer variant with the touchscreen. She loves the thing. Regularly sees a legit 8 hours of use between charges...

In terms of numbers of projects, most projects are internal/corporate vs customer/public. The majority of corporate and enterprise development is still java.

    Anyone install on Haswell?

I wanted to bump this thread. My machine washard-freezing at least every few days, and most of the time it happened during some network intensive operation. Then I found a scenario which caused the hard freeze reliably. I run Windows 8 inside a VirtualBox VM, with a vnc viewer pointing to the...

Haswell with 3 monitors "just works" w/Mint 15

I just confirmed that I can run different resolutions on each display.

Haswell with 3 monitors "just works" w/Mint 15

What's with the 1950x11080? Do you mean 1920x1080? I'll have to check tomorrow, but I don't anticipate any problems. I'm currently running 1920x1080 on two monitors, and 1900x1200 on a third.

Haswell with 3 monitors "just works" w/Mint 15

FYI, I built a new machine using an i7 4770 and a mobo with vga, hdmi, displayport, and dvi. I just received my third monitor today, a Dell 2412M, and plugged it in via displayport. The other two monitors are 23" 1080p monitors. I'm running Mint 15 x64 with Cinnamon, and version 3.9x of the...

Anyone using a foot pedal for non-driving games?

I used to use pedals from an old microsoft usb wheel to move forward/back in Counterstrike and Team Fortress, back in the early 2000's. I got so used to it that it became a crutch. It got to the point that I couldn't play FPS's without them.
