I'm running Unreal Tournament on a PII 400 / Geforce 2 MX (Hercules)...and getting 44 fps at 1280x1024x16. Does this sound right to you guys? Is it high/low?

Go with the MX. You are right, the Radeon is much more CPU demanding. Thump, you practically answered your own question.
The MX, preferably the Hercules, is the way to go. Fits your CPU (and wallet) perfectly.
If you want something even cheaper, choose another brand MX (lesser brand). Sure...
Does the Hercules 3D Prophet II MX DDV (Dual Display Video) supports Twinview? And how well does it perform this?
