Hi, I have the above DVD-ROM drive and wanted to make it region free by using the 1.22F firmware update. I've heard that some after this update some motherboards don't let you enable the DMA on the drive anymore. Anyone done this on a Abit KT7-RAID? Work fine? Thanks SOS

Thanks Origen. I've pretty much tried all those things. I think I'm just fussy and it looks OK, but monitor will be some of the problem no doubt. I'm trying a different DVD and it's a lot better. I got the "Hardware accelerator" option to work when in 1024*768 mode, but it didn't...

Hmmmm, seems like I didn't really make myself clear. I meant comparison between a PC system using software decoder and hardware as in a stand alone non-PC system, like hifi components. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I read that the picture is excellent. SOS

He he, trust me, I want a new monitor. Some 19 inch ones I've seen look excellent. The rest of my new system hasn't left me with a lot of cash left over, and we all know monitors aren't cheap. Still, there must be a reason why newer monitors would be better for DVD playback.

Hmmm, the monitor eh? So why would a better monitor provide better quality DVD playback? I've heard something about low refresh rates being bad.

I'm using a LeadTek GeForce2 MX card. Most people say that most of the time the software decoder does a good job. SOS

Hi, I just got a Pioneer 105s DVD-ROM and although the DVD movie playback isn't at all jerky, the picture quality seems dubious compared to a proper non-PC setup. What is the most likey cause of this? Monitor? I'm using PowerDVD on an Abit KT7-RAID/Duron 600Mhz system. Thanks SOS

Yeah, you'd think that would be the case, but I can still play 16-bit files fine. Oh well, disabling that fixed my soundcard problem. SOS
