consider using MAC filtering
maybe don't boradcast your wireless network's name
make sure you are not using the default password that the router is assigned when you first set it up
under the remote desktop options, there is a option to leave the sound at the remote pc. by setting this option the sound played from you main pc will not be played on the pc you are remoting from. i have a similar setup, but no one else uses the pc i have setup for this.
I agree with RebateMonger. For that reason, I have setup the PC i remote into at home with ftp services as well. A free FTP file server program is Filezilla. Good luck OP!

are you sure their PCs don't have any firewall software like Norton Internet Security? I have helped a friend with the same issue and it was due to firewall software.
i have been in the same position. pretty much use "my network places" and browse to the computer that has the printer. when you view that computer it will show any shared devices/files. there it should list the printer. double click on the printer and it will setup to work with your laptop.
If your pc at home is always connected via some broadband connection why dont you use some remote control software like UltraVPN, which lets you remote to your home pc by using a java applet. I've used it at various places to check personal email and it works great.
