    AMD X2 3800+ 939 for $99.99 (TigerDirect rebate)

I'm upgrading from Socket A, and have an X1650 XT AGP card, and don't have enough scratch to replace the RAM or go PCIe. So this seemed sensible with a K8T800 Pro based board on eBay. I would have liked to go with an ASRock 939Dual something, but they are impossible to find new, and bare...

    Reference for Win2k

Yep, and I can see I'm going to have to study this time. Linux, I attempted to put on a partition and managed to break my w2k installation (Mandrake 9). I had a real party after that, trying to get rid of the Linux and start over. Don't know if I'll be making it to University.

MedicBob, LOL, great trick. Bet ya can't do that again! BTW, I did do a search, but didn't come up with anything. Glad to hear MS' books are useful. Guess they Ought to be, but you never know-

    Reference for Win2k

Hey I *told* you I was clueless! Seriously, though, I tinker around (read:break) the computer a lot and was kind of scared to go with XP. Not saying it was the right decision, but 5+ years of win98 was enough. I started with that one in a consumer preview around Jan of '98.

    Reference for Win2k

...and to put it bluntly (sorry, lost the connection and the message self-posted somehow) I pretty much don't have a clue. I'm having trouble with really simple stuff, so, rather than post about the specific questions, I'm wondering if there are any recommendations for a book that can help...

    Reference for Win2k

After many years of win9x, I finally decided to go to a flavor of NT. Decided against XP primarily because of the draconian registration, and got w2k.

    Spontaneous Reboot

lol, that would be a rip. WinXP is kinda scary anyway. Well, I wish that just because it was new it was good, but it ain't necessarily so.

    Spontaneous Reboot

I'm right there with you on retiring the BX setup, it's pretty long in the tooth. I picked up one of the newegg XP1600+ and am actually waiting for the MSI board for it to get back from RMA. If my venerable Abit board is going south on me, it really isn't much of an issue except that I won't...

    Spontaneous Reboot

Lately my main box has been rebooting spontaneously during normal desktop operation. It happens sporadically, after probably an hour or more of internet surfing or some such other non-stressing activity. I first noted it last month during a heat wave, and the ambient temp was pretty high in...

Online was a no-go for me. Called the local OD and they were out of stock *but*... the salesman said they were showing stock in the warehouse. And that some should come in today. I left work early with my online $20 coupon and backorder online printed pages in hand. Went to the store, empty...
