Hey, what kind of deal did you get on the Sony VPL-HS20? I saw this projector in action in a public place recently but nobody there had any idea what it cost or when it was even bought. It's an LCD projector, right? So do you get real darkness or is it grayish?
I've been out of college for a looooooooong time. I have a "real job". I can NEVER imagine such a setup in my home. Not unless I send my kids to work too.
What's special about DLP projection that you can watch regular TV better than on the DIY LCD pj?
Catch with DLP projector is the low bulb life expectancy. DIY LCD projector offers at least 20,000 hrs.
Better the LCD resolution and refresh speed, better the projection.

I'm surprised, because whenever I've had to return something at Frys (Sunnyvale store) the clerk would take a sweet ten minutes examining the contents and making notes before accepting my return.
I agree customer service is not a forte of Frys but for a family owned business that doesn't...
Puhleeease, dont compare CompUSSR/Cir$hit city with Fry's. I used to live in the Bay Area and one of the things I miss the most is a Fry's store within 2miles of home.
Fry's is the Vatican. It's the Mecca. It's the Kashi. Comparison to anything else is an insult.
I will have to drive a 150 miles...
I have Onkyo 601 and speakers and quite happy with it. Intend to either buy a DLP TV or front projector, I'm kind of leaning on front projection for sheer size, though bulb life would limit my usage. Of course the screen set up can be built for less than $250. In all I would have invested $2000...
Luthien,
Do you mean HD channels or even regular ones? I watched a demo of a Yamaha projector, probably a slightly higher end than the Infocus one and wasn't too happy watching a regular NBC show. However Discover HD was superb. I'm close to "making up my mind" but confused whether I need XGA...

You are all a bunch of spoilt rich brats.
"I will NEVER PAY more than $250 for a video card"!
My god. I would have to say that statement is atrocious. I make a 6-figure salary and have a reasonably luxurious life-style and wouldn't consider burning $400-500 on a frgn video card. I have been...
Do you use your projector in dark conditions/basement or can you do it anytime of the day, in well-lit rooms?
I have a huge wall in my living room that is perfect for projection but am concerned about the Lumen power I would need for day-time viewing.
