My XP install failed ("krnl386.exe not found") after it did the copy of my Windows 98 files that it wanted to replace. My machine is still in Fat 32 format and I have a Win 98 boot disk that will boot my old box. I have a backup copy of my c:\Windows directory. How do I uncompress the files...
I had that problem with a bad stick of memory. The machine would only reboot when my RAM was almost full (hitting the bad memory location). I didn't hit the problem with few/smaller programs. Of course, I suppose it could happen if your video RAM as bad/loose or you had a program conflict...
I had exactly the same problem when I installed one new machine with an 100 MB internal Zip drive using XP. I didn't notice it until I had a bunch of other software loaded. I got a copy of Partition Magic (PM) 7.0 at Fry's for $9.00 after rebate. This seemed to fix the problem OK. I did...

I installed a new ECS K7S5A mother board (with a BIOS dated 9/24/2001) and a AMD 1700+ CPU. Everything in the BIOS setup looked fine. The BIOS found my new Western Digital 120 GB HD, my Teac CD writer and my humble 100 MB...
