For a first DSLR, I like Olympus DSLR's. They are much cheaper priced when it comes to accessories and lenses. Remember, the body of a DSLR is the most expendable part of a camera setup. :)

I said the same thing about VS being up there in that list. I usually do all the code in VS then do the design either in just a notepad doc or if i have to, use Dreamweaver.
I learned a little C++ first but the first true lanaguage I picked up was Java. It seems to be that any of the more modern languages can be a good fit since they have heavy object-oriented guidelines which is very important to learn sooner rather than later.
There is a gotya there. You paid tax on the item and then the ink for those "free printers" is very high in comparison to the more expensive models. If you got a canon, you cannot even use different off-brand cartridges... I just bought a macbook as well.
You could have a very simple bar box. the difficulty comes when you do inlay designs and stuff. Pick up a Dremel if you want to do that, actually better yet a router.
