do you have any ide hard drives connected? if you do that causes problems at least it did for me. disconnect any other hard drives other than the sata one when doing a fresh install.
I've had the opposite experience as LasombraB. I've had a netgear 8 port switch for 3 years now and run at least 2 gigs of data through it everyday and never had a problem. I also have a 5 port netgear in another room thats been going strong for a year or so.
